2010 NFL Draft E-mails – Tim Tebow and the Jaguars (Post Draft)
Did you see that the Broncos-Jaguars game is almost sold out? And did you see that Tebow’s jersey is leading all rookies in sales? How stupid are the Jaguars for not drafting Tim Tebow?
–> They’re either morons or geniuses. They missed out on making millions of dollars and will once again suffer through numerous TV blackouts. But an e-mailer named Molson brought up a good point:
You know in the movie Major League when the Indians are struggling to make money and the ownership needs the team to screw up to justify moving to a more lucrative market? Of course no team would ever undermine the competitive sanctity of the league… but if they did, they’d probably reach by 1-2 rounds every pick, selecting players from positions that aren’t primary needs. Sound familiar?
My theory about the Jags is that it’s a plan to completely tank in terms of attendance and move to LA. They’re at about 68% capacity, the lowest percentage in the NFL. The tickets were the third-lowest price in the league, and the speculation is that the actual attendance is a lot lower than the announced attendance. I’m sure drafting Tebow would have significantly increased ticket sales, but I’m thinking that maybe the owner thinks he can’t make enough money even with Tebow. I think they want their attendance to get even worse so they can move to LA and that’s the reason for what happened in the draft. It makes more sense than them actually Alualu was the right pick at 10.
–> That’s a great point. The big losers on Draft Day were the few citizens of Jacksonville who follow the team and pay for season tickets. Tim Tebow would have ensured more fans in the stands. No one’s going to see Tyson Alualu play. Well, no one in Jacksonville anyway. I’ve been saying the Jags will be in L.A. by 2014, and I’m sticking to that prediction.
I have to respectfully disagree with your opinion on the Jaguars’ Alualu pick. Many teams had him flying up their draft boards drawing nearer to the draft, and “reportedly” several teams behind the Jaguars were very interested and liked him a lot. Supposedly one of these teams was the Miami Dolphins.
–> When a team makes a bad pick like the Jaguars did, some of these rumors tend to surface. Part of it is other teams protecting their colleagues from the media. The other part is that the team itself leaks false information to the media.
Don’t believe anything you hear. No one had Tyson Alualu ranked nearly that high. The Jaguars had their eyes set on Rolando McClain and C.J. Spiller. When both went off the board (thanks to other stupid teams) at 8 and 9, Gene Smith panicked.
If the Jaguars got a D for this draft, what does it take to get an F?
–> The only reason the Jaguars didn’t get an F is because they traded for Kirk Morrison. If that deal never happened, I would have gladly given them an F.
I noticed you don’t want to discuss the Tim Tebow pick publicly, but noting you said you were biased, I can’t help but think either you hate his guts or you’re a huge Florida fan.
–> I don’t hate Tebow’s guts and I’m not a Florida fan. I am actually a Tebow fan. I love his personality and dedication. He’s the sort of role model we need in today’s society when NFL players are raping women, getting tossed off planes and maliciously killing hundreds of dogs. I think anyone who hates on him (aside from those who cheer for Florida State, Miami or any of the 11 teams in the SEC) is a hypocrite.
I think Tebow will succeed – but I don’t know if that’s my brain talking or the part of me that wants him to thrive. That’s why I couldn’t grade the pick.
