NFL Draft Mailbag Notes: Note that the e-mails I received have been italicized and left unedited. My responses follow them.

2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Tarvaris Jackson and Andy Reid

I think your off on your draft board.. I totally see the Vikings taking the Reciever with the 22nd pick…. You seem adament that this won’t happen.. You know Childress is on the Hot seat this year and you hate Tarvarus Jackson more than ever… so Childress wants Tarvarus to have some more options to make Jackson look like the qb “he” wants him to be. He, as do I, feel that Jackson can beet out Sage Rosenfel for the compitition.

I feel Childress only allowed Rosenfel to come to Minnesota so he can say that he brought in Competition to satisfy those who don’t want him to hand the job to Jackson… Your gonna be critisizing Childress, and I hope your wrong cause you have been before, but Jackson will be the qaurterback in 09 and Childress will go for a Wideout for his young qaurterback, either HAKIM NICKS, or PERCY HARVIN…watch and right me back Watler….

P.S you hate us Tarvarus Jackson believers…

My Response:

I can’t see the Vikings taking a wideout at No. 22. This current regime paid tons of money to Bernard Berrian and has something invested in Sidney Rice. Rice isn’t even 23 yet, and he was hurt all last year. Assuming Minnesota doesn’t take a receiver, I’m expecting Rice to have a breakout season. And besides, why would Childress, who’s on the hot seat, wait for another young wideout to progress?

Also keep in mind that receivers have slipped out of the first round recently. There were none in the first round last year, and only one in 2006.

Hey, I don’t hate Tarvaris Jackson. I’m rooting for him to beat out Sage Rosenchoker. I made a lot of money betting against Jackson and the Vikes in the playoffs last year, and I’m hoping for another opportunity to strike gold. The Vikings will never win in the playoffs with Jackson, unless they’re playing another QB of equal incompetence, which is very unlikely.

SF just signed OT Marvel Smith to play RT and they’ve released Jonas Jennings. Singletary as said they’ll take BPA at #10…so, that’s not Sanchez. It could be Jenkins, or best OT, pass rusher (if Brown’s still on the board, he could be the pick), or if Raji miraculously fell, he’d be the guy. Agree, if OT’s the 1st rd pick, Sintim’s a good 2nd rounder.

My Response:

I don’t see why Mark Sanchez wouldn’t be the best player available. In fact, Mike Lombardi recently said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Sanchez went top five, and he also said he would be shocked if he made it past Jacksonville.

With Marvel Smith on the team, I think you can rule out OT in the first round. I don’t see Raji falling…so it would be between Everette Brown, Sanchez and Tyson Jackson, according to my mock. Given that the 49ers are a new regime hungry for a franchise quarterback (they were willing to pay Kurt Warner $15 million a year), the pick will be Sanchez if he’s even on the board.

What is your problem with Andy Reid? You obviously have a some agenda – it takes away from the validity of your site.

My Response:

Sorry you don’t like the Andy Reid bashing, but you may notice that I make fun of a lot of players and coaches; not just Reid. Reid does a great job of preparing his teams to play as underdogs, but he makes way too many mistakes on Game Day. He is also rude and pompous during his press conferences.

I have been thinking about how you don�t think that people will trade up into the top 5 because it costs too much money. I agree I can�t see anybody in the 20�s drafting up but I think there is a possibility of a team that is closer to move up if they fall in love with a player at a position of need. Although some teams are definitely feeling a cash crunch there are other teams that are still spending freely. Therefore, I don�t think it is right to throw a generic financial crisis over every team.

My Response:

I know what you’re saying, and your speculation would make a lot of sense if the NFL had a rookie pay scale. You make a good point that teams are still spending, but keep this in mind – the main thing with the draft is that owners with top-10 picks have to pay tons of money to unproven commodities. That’s key. If they draft a bust, they’re going to owe truckloads of money to a bum. In this economy, no one wants to take that risk. That’s the difference between paying top-five money to a player and $12 million to Kurt Warner. Warner is established; these guys could bust.
