This is the 2019 NFL Combine Stock Report for the defensive backs. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.
DeAndre Baker, CB, Georgia
DeAndre Baker expected to run in the 4.4s at the combine, but he managed a 4.53 on his first run. He was even worse the second attempt, generating a 4.63. Charlie Campbell reported that several teams had Baker as their sole first-round cornerback, but I have to wonder if that’ll change after these runs as well as his mediocre showing in the drills.
Corey Ballentine, CB, Washburn
Corey Ballentine put together a tremendous athletic profile at the combine. His 40 times were just fine (4.47), but he notched an 11-foot-3 broad jump, a 39.5-inch vertical and a 6.82 3-cone time. Ballentine is a short corner from a small school, so he needed this to help his draft stock.
Mike Bell, S, Fresno State
A slow 40 shouldn’t kill a prospect’s draft stock, but Mike Bell’s time was especially sluggish. He ran a 4.84 at the combine, matching his poor jumping numbers (30-inch vertical, 9-10 broad jump), all of which will sink his chances of being selected on Day 2.
Blace Brown, CB, Troy
Blace Brown struggled in 2018 because of an injury. It seems as though he’s not over those woes, however. Brown was incredibly slow in the 40, turning in a 4.75. He also had a poor 3-cone time of 7.33. Brown will likely slip to the late rounds, though he could provide value there, as he should get over his injury eventually.
Sean Bunting, CB, Central Michigan
Sean Bunting had a solid 40 time, registering a 4.42 at 6-0, 195. He also posted some other stellar numbers, including a 10-foot-6 broad jump and a 41.5-inch vertical. The biggest take-away for me was that Bunting interviewed extremely well, which is very important for his draft stock.
Jamel Dean, CB, Auburn
Jamel Dean was explosive in the 40. Despite measuring in at 6-1, 206, Dean sprinted a terrific 4.30 40, ranking second among all defensive backs in that category. He also notched a 10-foot-10 broad jump and a 41-inch vertical, which are great numbers for a 6-1 cornerback.
Mark Fields, CB, Clemson
Mark Fields had an awesome run in the 40, sprinting a 4.37. He was also very smooth in the drills. Fields needed a great combine to generate some attention after spending time in a crowded defensive backfield, so that mission was certainly accomplished.
Will Harris, S, Boston College
Will Harris has gotten positive marks for his character traits. He’ll now be able to pair those with a strong athletic profile. Harris had a terrific 40 at the combine, sprinting a 4.42. His jumping numbers were fine as well (36.5-inch vertical, 10-3 broad jump), as was his 3-cone time of 6.91.
Montre Hartage, CB, Northwestern
It’s never good to be small and slow, as I was once told when trying my hardest to play football. Montre Hartage will be told the same. At 5-11, 190, Hartage was supposed to run faster than 4.68, but that’s what his time was in Indianapolis. His 34.5-inch vertical won’t help either.
Michael Jackson, CB, Miami
Michael Jackson had a solid 40-yard dash, running a 4.45 despite measuring in at 6-1, 210. He also hit 40.5 inches in the vertical and 10-foot-10 in the broad jump. More importantly, he was very fluid in the drills.
Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston
On the other end of the spectrum from Montre Hartage, Isaiah Johnson proved to be both big and fast. Despite measuring in at 6-2, 208, Johnson blazed a 4.40 40-yard dash at the combine. He also posted an 11-foot-1 broad jump and smoked the 3-cone, clocking in at 6.81. Even better, Johnson was one of the major winners in the drills. He’ll likely generate interest from the Seahawks and teams that run similar defenses.
Justin Layne, CB, Michigan State
Justin Layne’s combine 40 time of 4.51 wasn’t going to turn any heads, but he was excellent when participating in the drills. Layne’s arm length also ranked near the top of all the cornerbacks, as they measured in at 33 inches. He notched a nice 3-cone time of 6.90 as well. Layne may have improved his stock to Day 2 consideration.
David Long, CB, Michigan
David Long had a solid 40-yard dash with a 4.45. Where he really shined, however, was the drills, as he was one of the top performers in some of those. Oh, and he also had some other stellar numbers, including a positional best 3-cone time of 6.45, as well as a vertical of 39.5 inches.
Amani Oruwariye, CB, Penn State
Amani Oruwariye posted a solid 40 (4.47) at 6-2, 205. He also had a great 3-cone time of 6.82. The biggest take-away from Oruwariye’s combine performance was that he was one of the best cornerbacks in the drills. He looked terrific even before making a one-handed interception.
Darnell Savage, S, Maryland
Darnell Savage had some huge plays in big games during his time in Maryland. That translated into his combine performance. He was one of the fastest safeties in Indianapolis, clocking in at 4.37. He also was able to record a 39.5-inch vertical and a 10-foot-6 broad jump.
Kendall Sheffield suffered a partly torn pectoral in the bench press and couldn’t work out as a result. The good news is that Sheffield won’t require surgery, but unlike Billy Price last year, he really needed the combine to boost his draft stock.
Juan Thornhill, S, Virginia
Juan Thornhill posted some ridiculous numbers in Indianapolis. He had a 4.42 40-yard dash, which was a great number for a 6-0, 205-pound safety. Even better, he recorded a near-record 11-foot-9 broad jump and 44-inch vertical.
Greedy Williams, CB, LSU
Charlie Campbell broke a story where he spoke to several teams that graded Greedy Williams in the second round. Williams blazed a 4.37 in Indianapolis, yet he’s still getting a stock-down arrow, which may seem odd if you didn’t pay attention to Williams in the drills. He was all over the place in those. He did not look like a first-round pick.
Zedrick Woods, S, Ole Miss
Zedrick Woods had the fastest 40-yard dash among every single player at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, posting a 4.29 time. Woods didn’t do anything else of note, but his 40 time certainly generated some buzz.
