2018 NFL Combine Stock Report:

This is the 2018 NFL Combine Stock Report for the defensive backs. Follow me @walterfootball for updates.
Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville
Jaire Alexander was the best cornerback at the combine. He stood out over everyone in the drills, and most of his numbers were outstanding. He ran a 4.38 40 and posted a 10-7 broad jump. Alexander’s injury history might be the only thing keeping him out of the opening round, but there’s now a good chance he’ll be chosen Thursday night.
Troy Apke, S, Penn State
Wow, where did this come from!? I’m a Penn State alumnus, and I did not expect this. Troy Apke posted some amazing numbers. He ran 4.34 in the 40 as a 200-pound safety. He also leapt 41 inches, hit 10-11 in the broad jump and completed the 3-cone in 6.56 seconds. The numbers themselves don’t mean Apke will be a good pro, but he was also very fluid in the drills! This will at least force NFL decision-makers into reviewing his film to see if they missed on anything.
Tony Brown, CB, Alabama
The Alabama cornerbacks all ran well. Tony Brown hit 4.35 in the 40, and he also managed a 10-6 broad jump. His 40 was pretty much the same as Anthony Averett’s, but Brown was much better in the drills. Brown may have moved himself into second-day consideration.
Terrell Edmunds, LB/S, Virginia Tech
Terrell Edmunds wasn’t great on tape, which is why he’s not a projected first-round pick like his brother, Tremaine. However, the former Edmunds stood out Monday, posting some ridiculous workout figures. He ran a 4.47 (at 6-0, 217), leapt 41.5 inches and posted an 11-2 broad jump. Terrell Edmunds could go in Round 2.
Tre Flowers, S, Oklahoma State
Tre Flowers didn’t have the best numbers Monday, but they weren’t bad either. His 4.45 40 and 10-2 broad jump were decent. He’s getting a stock-up arrow because of his field workouts, which were very impressive.
Rashaan Gaulden, CB, Tennessee
Rashaan Gaulden is a good player on tape, and he had a solid showing in the drills Monday, but his testing numbers were absolutely dreadful. He ran a 4.61, failed to get 10 feet in the broad jump, posted a mere 30-inch vertical, and was slower than seven seconds (7.16) in the 3-cone. This could knock him down one round.
Mike Hughes, CB, Central Florida
Mike Hughes’ numbers weren’t very good. His 4.53 40 was sub par, though he did get 10-7 in the broad jump. The primary reason he’s getting a stock-down arrow is because he struggled in the drills, as he looked pretty stiff. He’s close to being a first-round pick, but this showing didn’t help him.
Godwin Igwebuike, S/LB, Northwestern
Godwin Igwebuike was a sold player on film, and he tested much better than expected. He ran a 4.44 40 and posted a 10-8 broad jump. He was even better in the 3-cone, notching one of the best times at his position with a 6.56.
Donte Jackson, CB, LSU
Donte Jackson didn’t quite get the 4.2 he thought would scare John Ross, but he was still able to run an exceptional 4.32. Additionally, he was one of the best performers in the drills. Jackson could be chosen in the top 20.
Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa
Joshua Jackson didn’t have the best testing numbers. His 4.56 wasn’t horrible, but it didn’t help either. His 3-cone time (6.86) was worse. He also didn’t look comfortable at all in the field workouts, as he looked sloppy. I’ve had Jackson in the top 10 of my 2018 NFL Mock Draft, but that won’t be the case anymore starting Tuesday.
Derwin James, S, Florida State
Derwin James’ leaping numbers were excellent. He had an 11-0 broad jump and a 40-inch vertical. His 4.47 40 was also solid for a player his size (6-2, 215). James was great in the drills as well, cementing his status as a top-12 pick.
Kameron Kelly, S, San Diego State
Kameron Kelly struggled at the combine. He posted a poor 40 of 4.66, and his 3-cone time was a dreadful 6.94. Teams undoubtedly will be thinking that Kelly will have to move from cornerback to safety.
Avonte Maddox, CB, Pittsburgh
Avonte Maddox ran a 4.39 40 and completed the 3-cone in 6.51 seconds. His broad jump (10-5) and vertical (37 inches) were also solid. Even better, Maddox thrived in the drills. He definitely helped himself in Indianapolis.
Tarvarus McFadden, CB, Florida State
Tarvarus McFadden had an all-around horrible Monday at the combine that will undoubtedly send him tumbling down draft boards. McFadden began with a poor 4.67 40, then looked terrible in the drills. He had a nice vertical (38.5), but that wasn’t enough to salvage his terrible showing.
Justin Reid, S, Stanford
Justin Reid was one of the best safeties at the combine. He started his day with a 10-8 broad jump and a 36.5-inch vertical, then ran a 4.40 40. He followed that up with an exceptional showing in the drills. To top it off, his 3-cone time was a strong 6.65. Reid could be chosen toward the end of the opening round, and it’s unlikely that he’ll get out of the second.
Denzel Ward tied Donte Jackson for the fastest 40 for a cornerback at the combine with a 4.32. Not only that, but he timed 1.47 in the 10-yard split, which was 0.01 seconds faster than Marshon Lattimore last year. Ward also notched an 11-4 broad jump and a 39-inch vertical. Ward should be the first cornerback chosen, and it’s not out of the question that he could go as early as No. 4 overall.
