The Denver Broncos were rumored to be interested in trading for Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford prior to Stafford being dealt to the Los Angeles Rams. WalterFootball.com has learned that Denver made a competitive offer.

Broncos President of Football Operations John Elway and new General Manager George Paton said they were open to upgrading the quarterback position, and reports had Denver as a team pursuing Stafford. Incumbent starting quarterback Drew Lock has been inconsistent in two seasons since being a second-round pick, and Denver sought to include Lock in a trade for Stafford.

According to to league sources, the Broncos offered the the ninth-overall pick, Lock, and a third-round choice for Stafford while also asking for a draft pick back from Detroit in the trade. The Lions decided to take the Rams’ offer of quarterback Jared Goff, a 2022 first-round pick, 2023 first-round selection, and a 2021 third-round choice.

Denver will now have to pursue other options to replace Lock as one of the most sought-after veteran options is unavailable with Stafford landing with the Rams.
