2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Drunk Terry, Texans, Rams
You don’t need to be disrespectful of Terry Bradshaw. He is a respected Fox analyst and HOFer (something you’ll never be) and the only QB in history with FOUR Superbowl rings (also something you don’t have). He had the Cardinals picked from preseason. Something you couldn’t do. Heck, apparently you couldn’t even get your pick 6 for this week right. If your little drunken TB schtick amused you, great, you have a smaller mind than you first thought. Wasn’t funny. So stop being a jerk and just stick to your fantasy football stats.
My Response:
Relax – it’s just some humor. Some people found it funny. You didn’t. It’s a running joke on the forums that Terry Bradshaw shows up to the pre-game show drunk out of his mind.
I will disagree that Bradshaw is respected, however. He’s more of a clown than anything on that show, and his four rings and Hall of Fame status have nothing to do with his drunken analysis. Also, I’m not sure what you mean by “pick 6.” You might be asking a lot of me to predict that Troy Polamalu would intercept a pass and take it back to the house. Sober Terry might not have even gotten that one.
I looked at the mock draft for this year, and you have gravitated towards William Moore as the Texans’ pick, and, while I would personally go B.J. Raji if I believed Rashad Johnson would fall to them in the second round, I understand the pick. The Texans find themselves in a situation where, while no particular player is in dire need of an upgrade, there are about a dozen or so players that played hard but are not top-tier talent, so getting a free safety works for me as well as anyone else, I guess.
One of your database drafts, Draft Tek, allowed me to see what would happen if a trade went down, and the New York Giants got Jeremy Maclin at number 15, and the Texans at 29 got… WILLIAM MOORE! They also grabbed Mike Mickens and Evander Hood with their second round picks and a DE in the third round. While I feel this particular draft would be AWESOME…
…is there any chance of this happening? Would the Giants give up their free second-rounder to get Jeremy Maclin? I know you said the draft is deep on receiver, but Kenny Briit is no Maclin, right?
Also, Sage Rosenchoker needs a change of scenery. I think he could be a good backup QB for another team, but Houston has lost all faith in him, and he would just collapse every snap he took (this same thing happened to former Astros choke artist turned star Phillies closer Brad Lidge). But, after his play this season, would anyone take him? I know last year Minnesota offered a third rounder and we snubbed our noses. Could we get that this year?

I just updated my mock and I don’t have B.J. Raji being available at No. 15 anymore. He’s had a great Senior Bowl, so he moved all the way up to No. 9.
But I think you’re right, and I mentioned this in my write-up of the Texans’ No. 15 pick. Trading down is a very realistic possibility for them. William Moore’s stock is slipping, so there’s a good chance that Houston won’t be able to address any positions of major need when they pick without reaching.
It’s tough to project trades, but DraftTek does a good job with those. I think that trade makes sense; it would make sense for both parties.
As for Rosenchoker, I agree that he lost his value with that epic collapse against the Colts. The Texans should have taken that third-rounder. They can still get a draft choice, but it’ll probably be in the middle rounds. If some team’s quarterback tears his ACL or something during training camp or preseason, the Texans may have better luck trading him for a 2010 selection.
I am a die-hard Giants fan and i have to wonder why the Giants would take Javon Ringer unless both Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward leave in free agency. The Giants have will have two good backup running backs in Ahmad Bradshaw and Danny Ware (maybe hes not good but hes solid for a third-stringer). the Giants, as i know you know, are desperate for a safety; i dont think the Giants will take a running back so early unless both Jacobs and Ward leave.

I see Derrick Ward leaving. With Ward gone, the Giants won’t have a pass-catching running back of Ward’s caliber. I think Javon Ringer can fill that role perfectly.
Just curious to see how you feel about a theory I looking at while looking at my own mock. I know everyone is saying that Offensive Tackle is a lock for the Rams at #2 but now that they have Steve Spagnuolo as their head coach I no longer agree. I believe he will take a shot at Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo or Florida State defensive end Everette Brown. What better way to bring in his system than to grab an immediate threat with the pass rush and then trade back into the first round or grab an offensive tackle at the top of the second.

I can see your logic, but historically, it hasn’t really worked that way. When Marvin Lewis was hired by the Bengals, his first pick was on offense even though he was a defensive guy. Same with Mike Nolan in San Francisco. Look at Atlanta – Mike Smith, also a defensive guy, went quarterback/offensive tackle and spent big bucks on a running back.
Coaches are cocky by nature. Based on what I’ve seen, I think most of them believe they’re that good that they can mold players on the roster and/or late-round picks to become key cogs of their scheme.
By the way, I read a report today that said the Rams will pushing hard for Michael Crabtree. This makes some sense because Torry Holt’s time in St. Louis is running out, and there is no clear-cut No. 1 offensive tackle. Plus, Crabtree can sell jerseys better than anyone, and that’s really important in this economy.
