2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Draft Week Questions III
I’m curious as to what you make of the Panthers giving Delhomme such a massive contract (42.5 million over 5 years) and Gonzalez being traded for a 2nd rounder a full year from now. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like both organizations are behaving like Ostriches with their heads in the sand. Delhomme was never an exceptional QB, and he had some utterly awful performances over the last season (on top of the fact that he’s 34…), which really just makes the deal seem awful for Carolina. Yes, he took up a lot of cap room this year which is now off the books for them, but 42.5 million is a lot of money for a mediocre at best QB.
The Gonzalez trade seems even more bizarre. Far and away the best player on KC last year, and in my opinion the best TE ever and still playing, he’s been traded for a single 2nd round pick? And not even one in this draft? I realize he’s getting up there in years, and that TE is a devalued position these days, but Tony is no ordinary TE. He routinely puts up approximately 1000 yards and 8ish TDs per year, which would be awesome numbers if he were a WR let alone a TE. It’s even more remarkable considering he’s had utter garbage throwing to him ever since Trent Green got his head bashed in (With the possible exception of Thigpen over the course of last year). What is Scott Pioli doing?
My Response:
I don’t get the Jake Delhomme contract either… especially after that horrific playoff performance. I wouldn’t have given him the money. Like you said, he’s mediocre at best.
As for the Chiefs-Falcons trade, I actually think it’s a good deal for both sides. Atlanta gets a top-notch tight end for Matt Ryan. For the Chiefs, they’re getting the best value they can for Tony Gonzalez. Think about it this way – if they keep him on the roster for two years, he’ll produce for them, but it won’t matter because they won’t be a playoff team until 2011, or maybe 2010. By then, Gonzalez will be too old and won’t command nearly as much trade value. So, getting him for a second-round pick in 2010 will give the Chiefs a chance to acquire more young talent for the future.
I saw an ESPN report that they said they really want to pick Knowshon Moreno, even if it means they have to trade up to do it… Not sure if you saw that report, but it seems to make an awful lot of sense.
My Response:
I saw that report, and it sort of makes me believe that the Eagles will not be going after Knowshon Moreno. Andy Reid is pretty tight-lipped about things, so this definitely sounds like a smokescreen to me.
There is no way that the Giants draft a running back in the first round. They let Derrick Ward go because they didn’t want to have so much salary cap used at one position. That is they way they usually operate. he is a great back but that is the way the ball bounces sometimes.
My Response:
Knowshon Moreno wouldn’t cost the Giants much at No. 29. For instance, Joe Staley, drafted by the 49ers at No. 28 a few years ago, signed a 5-year deal worth just $8 million.
Moreno would be a huge steal, and he’s the best player on the board. Jerry Reese is a brilliant GM, and if he sees Moreno available, he won’t hesitate.
Your latest mock draft with Sanchez on the board until pick #8. Does it make more sense for the Raiders to trade down from 7 to a Sanchez suitor, especially considering the notion that many would consider DHB a reach at #7, and would likely be available in the teens? Furthermore, they could keep Sanchez away from the Broncos by selecting the trade partner (Jets, Redskins, etc.)
My Response:
I think trading back for the Raiders would definitely make sense, but when is the last time Al Davis has made sense? He’s a paranoid man, and he may actually think that Darrius Heyward-Bey isn’t much of a reach at No. 7. He’d probably be scared he couldn’t land his star wideout in the teens.
