2009 NFL Draft E-mails – Lions and Packers Draft Picks

  • From A.J.:

I’m just wondering what you think about the lions #1 overall pick. I see alot of people having the lions taking a QB, but they drafted Stanton high in the 2nd round like 2 years ago. I know he was injured his rookie year and he saw limited action this year, but he did put up very solid numbers in college. I guess I see it this way. If I were the lions GM (thank god I’m only pretending) then I know my team is at least a few years away, so why draft a QB right now and just have Joey Harrington all over again?

No, I’d start in the trenches and build O-line and D-line, Give Stanton a chance this year, or Kitna whatever is going on with him, And see what i can get out of them. I guess taking the QB #1 overall just dosent make sense. Then need to build up the base of the team first. I’m just wondering what you think about this? BTW I am in no way a lions fan, I’m just a big NFL fan and the whole 0-16 this is very amusing.

    My Response:

The fact that the Lions didn’t play Drew Stanton over Daunte Culpepper and Dan Orlovsky spoke volumes of what they think about him. Had they thought Stanton had a legitimate shot to be an NFL quarterback, they would have put him under center once Jon Kitna went down. That didn’t happen.

Remember, Matt Millen drafted Stanton, so he’s a hold-over from that regime. Millen’s talent evaluation was horrendous at best, so it’s safe to say that Stanton isn’t pro-material.

  • From Jerry M.:

Regarding those fans who dont think the Lions should choose a QB at number 1 should consider this:

The likelihood of the Lions picking up Culpepper’s option for next year is nil. That leaves Kitna and Stanton fighting it out for the number 1 job.

If Stafford/Branford don’t come out in the draft, those who believe you don’t need a qb to compete in the NFL will get a chance to see that theory put to the test since there is no #1 available in FA.

    My Response:

I completely agree – whether Detroit fans like it or not, it’s pretty much a given that the Lions are going with a quarterback. After an 0-16 season, the franchise can’t go forward without a new quarterback who will give fans a ray of hope for the future. Even if it’s not the right move, it’s something the Lions absolutely have to do.

  • From Jason G.:

As a Lions fan, I’m truly surprised that you would have a mock draft website where you say the Lions will have a choice between quarterbacks Jon Kitna, Daute Culpepper, Dan Orlvosky, Drew Henson and Mike McMahon? Mike McMahon hasn’t been on the Lions in years.

    My Response:

Yeah, that’s a joke. Just like it’s a joke that Drew Henson is on that roster.

  • From Andy E.:

I cannot believe you said Ted Thompson picks the best player avaliable. That is a false statement. Just look at last year with Justin Harrel as a first round pick. He had two torn biceps and was not event expected to be drafted until the much later rounds, if at all drafted. But don’t worry he turned out great! Not.

And another thing the Packers will not pick Malcolm Jenkins, they will resign Harris and what about Atari Bigby. Check your facts before posting these things. Did Bob Sanders tell you Charles Woodson is staying at the safety posistion?

    My Response:

“Best Player Available” doesn’t actually mean the best player. It’s a draft strategy where the GM selects the top player on his board, regardless of position. Ted Thompson did this with Brian Brohm. Brohm was high on his board, so he took him, even though quarterback wasn’t a need because of Aaron Rodgers.

As for Al Harris, he’s not a free agent. He’ll be cut after the Super Bowl. Harris told the media that he doesn’t believe he’ll be back with the team.

And as for Charles Woodson, I didn’t talk to Bob Sanders, but I did consult Common Sense. Woodson turns 33 soon. If the Packers believe Woodson can thrive at corner much longer, they’re delusional.
