2010 NFL Draft E-mails – Myron Rolle

  • From Eitan G. and Kevin L. (via Facebook):

Myron Rolle in fourth round because you question his dedication to football? Matt seemed to think otherwise in the Senior Bowl coverage. And being so bright, Rolle will understand that the football career is too good to pass at this stage in his life. He can do other stuff later. It only takes one GM who believes in him. Far more ridiculous reaches have happened in earlier rounds.

Agreed with the above. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – questioning someone’s dedication to football because they’re JaMarcus Russell and would rather wolf down a dozen Krispy Kremes is one thing, but questioning someone’s dedication to football because they decided to accept a once in a lifetime scholarship is completely different and frankly, just plain unfair.

–> Hey, I have all the respect for Myron Rolle, and there’s no denying that being a Rhodes scholar is prestigious, but a lot of teams will be turned off by the fact that he eschewed a year of football to go to Oxford. Sad, but true.

I would recommend reading “Patriot Reign” by Michael Holley. There’s a chapter in there where Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli talk about everything they look for in a draft prospect. They both agreed that outside of family, football absolutely has to be the No. 1 priority for any player they select. NFL GMs might believe that Rolle’s priorities are elsewhere – even if he’s a smart, nice guy.

  • From Matt T.:

I’m an avid 49ers fan, and I wanted to pass on that I disagree with the C.J. Spiller pick at 13, based on my interpretation of their GMs drafting style. While Scot McCloughan is partial to BPA, he loves linemen in the first round, on both sides of the ball; can’t get enough of them. That in concert with their needs really makes me think they’d take best OL on the board (at that point Bulaga) instead of taking Spiller.

The pattern on special teams returners has been rounds 3-5 for the Niners since McCloughan became GM. Yes, you have them taking an OL with the 2nd pick; I just don’t see them taking an RB at 13. I see them taking best OL, and having more of a BPA approach with the 16/17 pick.

–> The Spiller pick is getting a lot of mixed feedback. Half the Niners fans who e-mail me love it; the other half hate it. To me, you’re getting the best player available – a guy who can go the distance on any play and open up your stale offense. Spiller may not be available at 17, while it’s almost certain that you’ll be getting a first-round-caliber tackle at 17. Only the Seahawks would take a tackle between 14-16, and they’re looking for a guy to play the blind side.

  • From Dustin F. (via Facebook):

What do you think the effect of Kurt Warner retiring will have on the draft? Do you think the Cardinals will see what Matt Leinart can do?

–> The Cardinals won’t be in a position to draft a quarterback late in the first round. I think they should try to trade for Donovan McNabb. He has only a few years left in his prime, but this Arizona team is ready to win now, and the Cardinals offense suits McNabb better than any West Coast offense.

  • From John G.:

How likely is it that the Bucaneers trade up to get Suh number one, and what would they have to give up?

–> Per the trade value chart, the Buccaneers would have to surrender both of their own 2nd- and 3rd-round picks. The Rams may be desperate to move out of that top spot, so they may pull an Eric Mangini and accept less (maybe the Bears 2nd-rounder that the Bucs own and the 3rd-round pick).

Having said that, I’d bet against there being a trade; trades seldom happen in the top five because teams don’t want to pay top-five money to unknown commodities.

  • From Julius D.:

This kid has got better throwing mechanics than Tim Tebow:

–> Perhaps, Julius, but does he have Tim Tebow’s heart, leadership and intangibles? Can he sell tickets in Jacksonville like Tebow can? I highly doubt it.
