These are notes I took while studying each NCAA Tournament team. Most of this is unedited. I’ll have a more coherent breakdown in my NCAA Tournament picks.

    Clemson (21-11)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Sr, Sr, Jr, So, So, Jr

WHY TO LOVE: Elite defense (7th).

WHY TO HATE: Bad offense (89th).

Head coach Brad Brownell has never won an NCAA Tournament game (0-3).

3-7 road record. Quality road wins: None.

Clemson has a sluggish offense (67.6 ppg).

    Duke (29-4)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Sr, Sr, So, So, So, So

WHY TO LOVE: Elite offense (6th).

    Elite defense (6th).

This group won last year. Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler are both incredible players.

Nine conference wins of 15+ points (more than they won last year).

Last five Duke-North Carolina ACC Tournament winners have gone to the Final Four.

Fulfills all five requisites in the Portrait of a Champion (returning head coach, scored 76 ppg, 10+ margin of victory, in the tournament last year, seeded 1-5).

WHY TO HATE: 7-4 road record but no quality road wins

    Florida State (21-10)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Jr, Sr, So, Jr, Jr, Fr

WHY TO LOVE: Elite defense (2nd).

WHY TO HATE: Awful offense (154th).

Florida State has only one double-digit scorer, Chris Singleton.

Leonard Hamilton has never made it past the first round with Florida State. He has just three NCAA tournament wins in his coaching career.

    North Carolina (26-7)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Jr, Fr, So, So, So, Fr

WHY TO LOVE: Elite defense (3rd).

    Above-average offense (41st).

The Tar Heels will get at least one more victory than they should because of Roy Williams.

7-3 road record. Quality road wins: Florida State, Boston College.

WHY TO HATE: Five of the team’s top scorers are underclassmen. There are no prominent seniors.

Kendall Marshall is awesome, but he’s a freshman point guard. Not good.

Only four conference wins of 15+ points.

NCAA Champions are in the tournament the year before. North Carolina was not.

    Virginia Tech (21-11)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Sr, Sr, So, Jr, Sr, So

WHY TO LOVE: Great defense (24th).

WHY TO HATE: Below-average offense (61st).

5-6 road record. No quality road wins.

Seth Greenberg is just 1-3 in NCAA Tournament games.
