These are notes I took while studying each NCAA Tournament team. Most of this is unedited. I’ll have a more coherent breakdown in my NCAA Tournament picks.

    Arizona (27-7)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: So, So, Jr, So, So, Jr

WHY TO LOVE: Great offense (16th).

Head coach Sean Miller has taken Xavier to separate Elite Eight and Sweet 16 appearances.

WHY TO HATE: Below-average defense (67th).

Arizona has just one prominent scorer – sophomore forward Derrick Williams (19.0 ppg, 8.3 rpg).

None of the top six scorers are seniors; conversely, four are sophomores.

    UCLA (22-10)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: So, Jr, So, Fr, Jr, Jr

WHY TO LOVE: Good defense (35th).

Balanced scoring: Four scorers averaging 10.8 ppg or more.

WHY TO HATE: Mediocre offense (88th).

    No quality road wins.

Lost opening conference tournament game. No team that lost its opening conference-tournament game has won the national championship since 1985.

    USC (19-14)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: Jr, Jr, Sr, Jr, Fr, Sr

WHY TO LOVE: Good defense (30th).

Experience: Five of the top six scorers are upperclassmen.

WHY TO HATE: Bad offense (76th).

5-8 road record. Quality road wins: Tennessee, Washington.

Head coach Kevin O’Neill has been in only one NCAA Tournament game (0-1) since 1994. And O’Neill’s status for the tournament is up in the air.

    Washington (22-10)

EXPERIENCE: Top six scorers: So, Jr, So, Fr, Jr, Jr

WHY TO LOVE: Elite offense (9th).

    Above average defense (42nd).

Balanced scoring: Four scorers averaging 10.8 ppg or more.

Lorenzo Romar is a solid NCAA Tournament coach. In his past four appearances, Washington has gone to the second round and Sweet 16 thrice. Romar’s record in the NCAA Tournament is 7-5.

WHY TO HATE: No quality road wins (5-5).
