2013 NFL Combine: Stock Report – Running Backs

Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
Montee Ball had one of the slower times of the running backs in Indianapolis, clocking in at 4.66. He also had pedestrian showings in the vertical (32 inches) and broad jump (9-11). This is not going to erase the belief that Ball is nothing more than a Big Ten plodder with tons of mileage.

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State
Le’Veon Bell, the latest Big Ten plodder, weighed in at 230, which is eight pounds less than his listed weight with the Spartans. It’s important for Bell to show teams that he has some burst, so we’ll have to see if the weight loss translates.

FEB. 25 UPDATE: Le’Veon Bell ran well at his size, managing a 4.52. It looks like the weight loss paid off, as Bell might have convinced some teams that he’s capable of being more than just another Big Ten plodder.

Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas
Knile Davis had the fourth-smallest hands of all the running backs at the Combine (8 5/8 inches). However, that’s overshadowed by what he did Sunday. He ran an unofficial 4.30 40 with a 1.49 10-yard split, which was amazing. He was also excellent in the drills. Davis has been banged up the past couple of years, so he needed a quality showing in Indianapolis.

Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers
Jawan Jamison had the smallest hands of all the running backs at the Combine, as they measured in at 8 3/8 inches. It’s likely that Jamison will have a fumbling problem at the next level, so this could deter teams from considering him in the second round.

FEB. 25 UPDATE: Jamison’s freefall continued in Indianapolis. Being 5-7, 203, Jamison needed a fast 40. He ran 4.68 officially with a horrific 1.66 10-yard split.

Onterio McCalebb, RB, Auburn
Onterio McCalebb was trending on Twitter (follow me @walterfootball) when he ran an unofficial 4.21. Chris Johnson expressed concern, realizing his record of 4.25 was in jeopardy. McCalebb ended up with a 4.34, but that was still very impressive, as was his 1.45 10-yard split. McCalebb is just 5-10, 168, but teams may envision him as a Darren Sproles-type player, though Sproles is much bigger at 190.

Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina
Marcus Lattimore weighed in at 5-11, 221 pounds with 9 7/8-inch hands. He obviously won’t be working out Sunday, but the big news is that there is optimism surrounding Lattimore’s progress. He still has a long way to go, and may not be able to play in 2013, but it’s sounding like he could be ready by 2014.

Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M
Christine Michael was one of the top Combine performers on Sunday. Despite measuring in at 5-10, 220, Michael ran an unofficial 4.41 with a 1.51 10-yard split. He was also tops in the vertical at 43 inches. Michael enjoyed a great East-West Shrine week, so he’s been moving up draft boards throughout this entire process.

Robbie Rouse, RB, Fresno State
Robbie Rouse is another small running back who didn’t run well. Rouse, at 5-6, 190, had an official 40 of 4.80 with a 10-yard split of 1.64. Both numbers were absolutely awful and could cause him to go undrafted. His broad jump was also pedestrian (9-6).

Stepfan Taylor, RB, Stanford
Stepfan Taylor doesn’t have much explosion, so it’s not very promising that he measured in at 5-9, 214 at Friday’s weigh-in. His hands were just 8 5/8 inches. Taylor is not in the first four rounds of my 2013 NFL Mock Draft.
