2013 NFL Combine: Stock Report – Wide Receivers

Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
Some expected Tavon Austin to run in the 4.4s, but he silenced those critics by sprinting a 4.25 40 with an amazing 1.45 10-yard split. He also was sensational in the drills. He’s not getting out of the first round.

Josh Boyce, WR, TCU
Josh Boyce wasn’t in the 4.2s like a few of the receivers, but his 4.38 still really stood out – especially since he notched that both officially and unofficially. His broad jump of 10-11 was also excellent.

Marquise Goodwin, WR, Texas
Marquise Goodwin ran the fastest official 40 on Sunday with a 4.27. He also had a 1.43 10-yard split and an 11-foot broad jump. Goodwin is an athlete trying to learn football, but he looked good in the Senior Bowl. He’s still a project, but some team will probably take him in the third round.

Cobi Hamilton, WR, Arkansas
A couple of larger receivers had surprising hand size issues. Cobi Hamilton was one of them, as his hands measured at 8 3/4 inches. Hands that are nine inches or larger are considered fine; smaller hands can obviously cause drops and fumbles.

FEB. 25 UPDATE: Hamilton tested very poorly Sunday. His 40 wasn’t bad (4.47 unofficial), but his 10-yard split (1.63), vertical (29.5) and broad jump (8-11) all showed that he has very little explosion.

DeAndre Hopkins, WR, Clemson
Players often measure in shorter than what they are listed by their school, but that was not the case with DeAndre Hopkins, who was a solid 6-1, 214. Hopkins also tied for the third-biggest hands (10 inches) and had the fourth-longest arms (33 3/8) among receivers at Friday’s weigh-in.

FEB. 25 UPDATE: Hopkins posted pretty average numbers, save for his vertical (36 inches), but he caught everything in the drills.

Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee
Justin Hunter is an imposing figure at 6-4, 196. He also had some of the longest arms at the Combine, as they measured in at 33 1/4 inches. Hunter is projected to run a fast 40, which would really help his draft stock, considering his size.

FEB. 25 UPDATE: Hunter was expected to test well, and he did not disappoint. He ran a 4.41 unofficial with a 10-yard split of 1.54 despite being 6-4, 196. He also notched a 39.5-inch vertical and a broad jump of 11-4, which was tops for receivers.

Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee
Cordarrelle Patterson didn’t catch the ball very well in the drills, but he drew comparisons to Julio Jones, athletically. He ran a 4.37 at 6-2, 216, and also notched a vertical of 37 inches and a 10-8 broad jump. He’ll entice some team in the top 15 to take him off the board.

Kenny Stills, WR, Oklahoma
Mike Mayock saw Tavon Austin and Marquise Goodwin coming with awesome 40s, but he was shocked by what Kenny Stills did. Stills ran 4.28 unofficially with a 1.53 10-yard split. He also recorded an impressive 10-4 broad jump.

Ryan Swope, WR, Texas A&M
Ryan Swope had some of the smallest hands at the Combine; they were measured at just 8 1/2 inches. What he did on Sunday overshadowed this, however. Swope ran an official 4.34 40 at 6-0, 205 with a great 10-yard split of 1.47. He also notched a 37-inch vertical and a 10-5 broad jump while looking very strong in the drills. Former NFL personnel man Bryan Broaddus tweeted that he’s heard of teams liking Swope as a second-round prospect.

Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State
Markus Wheaton has to like what he accomplished in Indianapolis. He ran an unofficial 4.34 40 with a 1.52 10-yard split. He also recorded a 37-inch vertical and looked solid in the field work.

Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor
Terrance Williams is another big receiver whose small hands disappointed. It turns out that Williams’ hands measured at 8 3/4 inches, which were tied for fifth-smallest among receivers at the Combine.
