2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Gorgui Dieng


Position: Center

Size: 6-11, 245

School: Louisville, Junior


Strengths:

Shot blocking

Alters shots at the rim

Lateral quickness as a defender

Length

Active on the boards

Athleticism

Solid face-up game

Mid-range jumper

Right-handed hook shot

Footwork in the post

Runs the floor well

Quality passer for a big

Weaknesses:

Strength

Jump shot still a work in progress

Becoming a better finisher around the rim with his left hand

Puts the ball on the deck after an offensive rebound too often rather than just going up strong

Summary: Known as a shot blocking/rebounding/defensive-minded big man, Dieng projects to be a backup at the next level. His ability to score the basketball has improved year-by-year but is still a work in progress. On draft night, he figures to fall somewhere from the mid-teens to early 20s.

Player Comparison: Serge Ibaka/Ekpe Udoh. Dieng is somewhere between Ekpe Udoh and Serge Ibaka. All three guys are long, athletic, and entered the league with developing offensive games. Ibaka has really improved on the offensive end while Udoh has not. Dieng should be a more effective pro than Udoh, but not near Ibaka’s level unless his offensive game really makes strides.
