2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Jarnell Stokes

Position: Power Forward

Size: 6-9, 260

School: Tennessee, Junior

Strengths:
  • Strength
  • Physicality
  • Aggressive rebounder
  • Offensive rebounding
  • Establishing position down low
  • Out-muscling defenders in the paint
  • Good touch around the basket
  • Face-up jumper
  • Plays with great energy

  • Weaknesses:
  • Shot blocking
  • Defending on the perimeter
  • Below-the-rim player
  • Explosiveness
  • Needs to improve mid-range game

  • Summary: Stokes entered college a year early, so he is very young for a junior. Stokes was able to easily overpower players at the collegiate level, which accounted for most of his production; that will be much more difficult in the NBA. Since he is an under the rim player, he figures to be a borderline first-round pick.

Player Comparison: Brandon Bass. A bit undersized and lacking the ideal NBA athleticism, Bass has relied on his physicality and ability to carve out space down low to become a valuable role player. Stokes has the strength and build to carve out a similar career, but he needs to improve his mid-range game like Bass has steadily done.
