2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Dante Exum


Position: Point Guard

Size: 6-6, 190

School: Australia, 1995


Strengths:

Great size for an NBA point guard

Slashing ability

Creating off the bounce for himself or teammates

Finishing around the rim

Using his size to post up smaller defenders

Awesome in transition

Quick handles/first step

Court vision

Awesome in transition

Length is bothersome on the defensive end

Should be able to defend multiple positions

Rebounds well for his position

Weaknesses:

Inconsistent three-point shooter

Pull-up jumper needs work

Not that explosive at the rim

Is he a point guard or shooting guard?

Needs to get stronger

Summary: The Australian possesses a world of potential. At 18 years old, Exum possesses great size for the next level and is terrific when attacking the basket. His outside shooting is a concern, and some teams aren’t sure if he is a true point guard. Still, Exum figures to be one of the first names called at the 2014 NBA Draft.

Player Comparison: Michael Carter-Williams. Both Carter-Williams and Exum are long, wiry point guards with great height for an NBA point guard. Neither shoots it particularly well, but each is at his best creating off the bounce. Carter-Williams entered the league as a better distributor, but Exum has more scoring ability.
