Prospect Summary:
Sometimes players develop at a slower pace, and that was the case with Burch. After being a top recruit for South Carolina, Burch had a few quiet seasons before starting to make his presence felt in 2022 when he recorded 60 tackles with 3.5 sacks. After the season, he transferred to Oregon. In 2023, Burch notched 34 tackles, three sacks, and a pass batted. In his final season with the Ducks, Burch really came on as a pass rusher totaling 8.5 sacks to go along with 31 tackles, five passes batted, and one forced fumble.
In the pass rush, Burch can beat blockers with power or speed off the edge. He has a solid burst off the ball to get upfield and rare agility for a long, heavy, defensive lineman. Burch’s agility is shocking with the way he can contort his body and bend around the corner. Burch has the speed to get upfield, and he is capable of running past blockers. He also can be a power rusher that bulls tackles backwards or uses a power rup to gain leverage on blockers. With his strength and length, Burch is capable of shedding blocks to get free. Burch also is a physical tackler who will put quarterbacks or ball carriers into the turf hard. Burch has impressive instincts and vision to adjust to scrambling quarterbacks with a second effort that makes him dangerous in pursuit.
As a run defender, Burch sets a physical edge. He is strong at the point of attack to hold his ground and maintain his gap. He can shed blocks and flow down the line to get tackles out of his gap. With his height and length, Burch could be a real asset as a run defender in the NFL playing left defensive end against right tackles.
Burch has a rare and unique skill set that is very tough to find. He could be a 300-pound edge rusher in the NFL with the speed and agility of a much smaller player. Burch also has the size to move inside to defensive tackle. He could be an every-down tackle or move inside to tackle in the subpackage. Team sources say that Burch’s skill set and body composition are prototype as he resembles Julius Peppers with his height, weight, speed, and strength. His rare athletic ability can be seen in Burch having a background playing running back and wide receiver. He even ran the ball last year on a fake punt for a long gain. There is no doubt that Burch is a freak athlete with a ton of untapped athletic ability.
The criticisms with Burch are him not dominating earlier in college despite his freakish skill set. As a result, multiple sources graded Burch on day two. Team sources think Burch could go late in the first round and will go on day two if he doesn’t sneak into the opening night of the draft. Burch has a ton of upside and the potential to be one of the steals of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Prospect Comparison:
Mario Williams. Burch is a unique player that is tough to comp because there are not many 300-pound edge defenders. In speaking with team sources, they said Leonard Williams and Mario Williams were the closest they could think of in terms of the skill set. Mario Williams was faster, but Burch has played with more power.
