2023 Senior Bowl Rumors Thursday

With all the general managers, coaches and scouts in attendance for the Senior Bowl there is a lot of chatter going around. Here are some of the highlights from around the league on the fourth day of the 2023 Senior Bowl week.

In speaking to some league sources, they say the Indianapolis Colts are targeting a quarterback with their first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The franchise has the No. 4-overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and has run through a string of veteran quarterbacks since Andrew Luck retired. After Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan proved to not be multi-year starters, Indianapolis wants to resolve the position with a young franchise quarterback. Team sources say the Colts are definitely going to go with a quarterback if Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud gets to their pick.

Young and Stroud are the clear top-two quarterback prospects for the 2023 NFL Draft, but both have flaws. Teams love Young’s passing ability, his natural instincts as a passer, and his athleticism to make plays with his feet. However, his small size is worrisome, and that is going to be glaring when he meets with teams in interviews and on visits to their facilities.

With C.J. Stroud, teams have concerns about him being a scheme-product quarterback, plus they are disappointed with his demeanor. Stroud is not viewed as a vocal leader to lead a team. Rather, he is said to have a quiet, almost aloof, personality.

As a result of these issues, multiple sources from a number of teams say they do not think Young or Stroud is worthy of giving up the farm for in future draft picks to move up high in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. They see too much risk in either of them as a prospect to be willing to give up a huge haul in a trade. However, it only takes one team to feel differently and be desperate enough to make such a move. Additionally, given that the Texans – at No. 2 – and the Colts – at No. 4 – clearly need quarterbacks, a third team knows it has to jump to the first or third pick of the 2023 NFL Draft to get one of those signal-callers.

Another team that may or may not be in the market for a quarterback is the Washington Commanders. While Carson Wentz was a disappointment, some in the organization are very positive and hopeful about second-year quarterback Sam Howell. Picking 16th in the 2023 NFL Draft, any quarterback who gets to the Commanders will be a reach, so they may go with Howell as the favorite to be the starter next season. Sources with Washington told WalterFootball.com that the organization really wants to upgrade at the cornerback position. The Commanders feel they need more talent there and the players they have coming back need to play better. Don’t be surprised if the Commanders snatch up a cornerback in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, with some top options being Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon, Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez and Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr.

In the previous Hot Press, we discussed how it sounds like the Denver Broncos could easily fire general manager George Paton after the 2023 NFL Draft. Paton was close to being fired during the 2022 seasonby new team owner Greg Penner, but Paton survived for now. Many of the team issues were blamed on former head coach Nathaniel Hackett and some blame was also fell on the disappointing Russell Wilson. Interestingly during the interview process, former defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero defended Hackett and trashed Wilson. Evero and Hackett were college roommates and are close, but it definitely was not helpful for Evero’s hopes of becoming the head coach to trash the current starting quarterback who he would be inheriting.
