Each January, many in the NFL media start to come out with mock drafts. Waiting until after the college football season makes composing mock drafts a lot easier because a lot of the first-round prospects have been well-known for a long time by then. However, there are still some surprising names included in the new first-round projections, and one this year was Georgia Tech edge rusher Keion White.
White made it onto NFL teams’ 2022 preseason watch list mainly from his 2019 season at Old Dominion, when he collected 19 tackles for a loss, 62 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, an interception and a pass broken up. Old Dominion did not play football in 2020, and while White transferred to Georgia Tech for 2021, he missed the majority of the year with an injury. In 2022, he broke out with 7.5 sacks and 54 tackles while playing for a bad team. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder has quality size to go along with speed and athletic ability.
Sources from a handful of NFL teams told WalterFootball.com that none of them had a first-round grade on White. All of them had him graded on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft.
“He’s going to test well, so I always get worried about those types of guy, but I would’ve said late Day 2 – early Day 3 before Daniel Jeremiah tried to get me fired haha,” texted an AFC area scout. “I mean I’m sure [Jeremiah] getting it from somewhere, but man that felt really rich.”
While teams have White graded on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, he could improve on that if he works out as well as expected. Thus, those projections have a shot at coming true. However. heading into the NFL Scouting Combine, White has a consensus second-day grades around the league.
