2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Dario Saric

Position: Small Forward

Size: 6-10, 230

School: Croatia, 1994

Strengths:
  • Versatile offensive weapon
  • Three-point range
  • Mid-range jumper
  • Outstanding ball-handler for his size
  • Crafty scorer around the hoop with either hand
  • Able to post up smaller defenders
  • Moves well away from the ball
  • Can rebound and lead the break
  • Effective in transition as a scorer or distributor
  • Terrific court vision/passer
  • Basketball IQ
  • Plays hard on the defensive end
  • Has played at a high level overseas

  • Weaknesses:
  • Likely won’t come to the NBA right away
  • Explosiveness
  • Not strong enough to guard NBA power forwards
  • Not quick enough to defend NBA small forwards
  • Consistency with outside shot

  • Summary: Dario Saric fits the mold of many European combo forwards in that he brings a ton of versatility on offense but lacks the prototypical NBA athleticism of most NBA forwards. Saric has played at a high level overseas, so he isn’t as much of a project as most foreign prospects. Still, it is uncertain as to whether or not he will come to the NBA right away or stay overseas. The mid-late lottery seems like his landing spot.

Player Comparison: Hedo Turkoglu. A crafty foreign player who brings a lot of versatility but not much athleticism to the floor; Turkoglu was a solid role player at the next level even though he never had a true position on both ends of the floor. Dario Saric has a similar style of play, though more upside than Turkoglu ever did. Turkoglu was also a better outside shooter than Saric.
