Redskins Would Want Second-Day Picks for Trent Williams

One veteran who could be traded this offseason is Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams. He already wanted to be traded last year, but the team refused to deal him. Fences have been mended to a degree by new head coach Ron Rivera, but it still is possible Williams could be traded. Some with Washington want to keep him, while others at the organization think he should be traded. If the Redskins do move Williams, they would want to get second-day draft picks in return for the veteran tackle.
The Redskins would want a draft-pick package similar to the Texans trade that netted them a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft for left tackle Duane Brown. Former Texans general manager Rick Smith was able to get two picks in the deal, and the Redskins would want something similar. Washington is without its second-round pick as it was sent to the Colts when Washington moved up for Montez Sweat in the 2019 NFL Draft.
While that is what the Redskins want, it could be difficult to get that level of return, according to sources at other teams. Williams has dealt with injuries and a holdout that caused him to miss the 2019 season. Thus, sources at other teams believe Washington would have a hard time finding a team willing to pay what Houston got for Duane Brown. They say Rick Smith did an excellent job of leveraging a difficult situation and trading Brown in-season to a team desperate for offensive line help caused the good return of draft picks.
With the Redskins unlikely to get that caliber of return, that could further push them to keeping Williams. Team sources say Rivera has wanted to keep Williams and get him back in the fold to strengthen the Washington offensive line. It sounds like a Williams trade is less likely because of Rivera wanting to keep him.
