Husain Abdullah, FS, Washington State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 204.
Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
Combine 40 Time: 4.63.
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 6-7.
Jamar Adams, SS, Michigan
Height: 6-2. Weight: 212.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Combine 40 Time: 4.56.
Benchx225: . Vertical: .
Projected Round: 2-3.
Dominique Barber, SS, Minnesota
Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.71.
Benchx225: 23. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 4-5.
No surprise that Marion Barber’s brother put up 225 pounds 23 times. His 40 was disappointing, however.
Josh Barrett, SS, Arizona State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 223.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Combine 40 Time: 4.35.
Benchx225: 17. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 2-3.
In a weak strong safety class, Josh Barrett may have vaulted himself over Tom Zbikowski, Craig Steltz and Jamar Adams. A 223-pound safety with a 4.35 40? Amazing. Barrett was benched for a portion of the 2007 campaign, but he regained his job later in the year.
Brian Bonner, SS, TCU
Height: 5-10. Weight: 196.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Combine 40 Time: 4.64.
Benchx225: . Vertical: .
Projected Round: FA.
Caleb Campbell, SS, Army
Height: 6-1. Weight: 229.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.60.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 4.
Simeon Castille, FS, Alabama
Height: 6-0. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Combine 40 Time: 4.72.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 31.5.
Projected Round: 3.
As we can tell by Simeon Castille’s combine results, he’ll definitely have to move to safety in the NFL after playing corner at Alabama. Castille’s workouts were a bit disappointing.
Thomas DeCoud, FS, California
Height: 6-1. Weight: 207.
Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
Combine 40 Time: 4.50.
Benchx225: . Vertical: 35.5.
Projected Round: 3.
Thomas DeCoud bettered his 40 and had a 35.5-inch vertical, so he definitely didn’t hurt himself. I don’t think he stood out as much as Josh Barrett, however.
Quintin Demps, FS, UTEP
Height: 5-11. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.46.
Combine 40 Time: 4.40.
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: 31.5.
Projected Round: 2-3.
Once upon a time, I had Quintin Demps as my No. 2 free safety. I moved him behind Thomas DeCoud and DaJuan Morgan, but his dazzling combine could bump him ahead of those two. Regardless, he’ll be taken in the bottom of the second round, or the top of the third, at the very latest.
Michael Grant, Arkansas
Height: 5-10. Weight: 201.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Combine 40 Time: 4.37.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 31.5.
Projected Round: 4-5.
Michael Grant, previously a sixth-round prospect on this board, moved himself up a bit with a 4.37 40.
Marcus Griffin, FS, Texas
Height: 5-10. Weight: 201.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.71.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: 31.5.
Projected Round: 4-5.
Disappointing. I thought Marcus Griffin would run a 4.4 or 4.5.
Jonathan Hefney, FS, Tennessee
Height: 5-7. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.42.
Combine 40 Time: 4.59.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 29.
Projected Round: 2.
Jonathan Hefney’s size is going to hurt him. I had him at 5-9, but he measured in at 5-7. Some teams are just not going to take him until the later rounds because of that.
Chris Horton, SS, UCLA
Height: 6-0. Weight: 212.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Combine 40 Time: 4.56.
Benchx225: 14. Vertical: 28.5.
Projected Round: 7.
Tyrell Johnson, SS, Arkansas State
Height: 5-11. Weight: 207.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Combine 40 Time: 4.47.
Benchx225: 27. Vertical: 32.
Projected Round: 6.
Coming from a small school, Tyrell Johnson needed to stand out at the combine. Well, he ran a 4.47, benched 225 pounds 27 times and leaped 10 feet and 7 inches in the broad jump. Not too shabby.
Dennis Keyes, FS, UCLA
Height: 6-0. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.58.
Combine 40 Time: 4.60.
Benchx225: 15. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 5-6.
DaJuan Morgan, FS, N.C. State
Height: 6-0. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Combine 40 Time: 4.52.
Benchx225: 21. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 3.
DaJuan Morgan, Mike Mayock’s No. 2 free safety, performed admirably at the combine, though he didn’t really stand out like Josh Barrett.
D.J. Parker, FS, Virginia Tech
Height: 5-11. Weight: 192.
Projected 40 Time: 4.43.
Combine 40 Time: 4.53.
Benchx225: 19. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 4-5.
D.J. Parker wasn’t too impressive in the workouts, though his 40 was solid.
Kenny Phillips, FS, Miami
Height: 6-2. Weight: 202.
Projected 40 Time: 4.40.
Combine 40 Time: 4.54.
Benchx225: 19. Vertical: .
Projected Round: Top 20 Pick.
I was disappointed by Kenny Phillips’ 40. I thought he would run the 4.4s. A 4.54 isn’t bad, but he didn’t really stand out. Phillips could drop to the second half of the first round.
David Roach, FS, TCU
Height: 6-0. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.42.
Combine 40 Time: 4.40.
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: 38.
Projected Round: 4-5.
I was a big fan of David Roach’s combine. Aside from his 40 and vertical, Roach looked great in the drills.
Jamie Silva, SS, Boston College
Height: 5-10. Weight: 202.
Projected 40 Time: 4.56.
Combine 40 Time: 4.85.
Benchx225: . Vertical: .
Projected Round: 5.
James Silva’s numbers won’t jump out at anyone, but he’s just better in pads. I really like him as a mid-round sleeper.
Reggie Smith, Oklahoma
Height: 6-0. Weight: 199.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: Did not run.
Benchx225: 13. Vertical: .
Projected Round: Top 20 Pick.
I was disappointed to see Reggie Smith eschew his combine workout.
Craig Steltz, SS, LSU
Height: 6-1. Weight: 213.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Combine 40 Time: Did not run.
Benchx225: . Vertical: .
Projected Round: 2.
Craig Steltz is another safety who didn’t work out in Indianapolis.
Nemo Warrick, Michigan State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 211.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Combine 40 Time: 4.51.
Benchx225: 16. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 6.
D.J. Wolfe, SS, Oklahoma
Height: 5-11. Weight: 207.
Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
Combine 40 Time: 4.63.
Benchx225: . Vertical: .
Projected Round: 5-6.
Tom Zbikowski, SS, Notre Dame
Height: 5-11. Weight: 211.
Projected 40 Time: 4.42.
Combine 40 Time: 4.52.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: .
Projected Round: 2-3.
Perhaps the thing that stood out the most about Tom Zbikowski’s combine was when he yelled at strength and conditioning coach John Lott during his bench workout. Lott, attempting to motivate the mohawked safety, yelled, “Come on, Rudy!” during Zbikowski’s bench press. Zbikowski, offended by being referred to as an overachiever with no business on the football field, responded, “Don’t call me that again!” Very cool.
