Stefphon Jefferson 2013 NFL Draft Diary: Post-Combine

By Stefphon Jefferson, as told to Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell

WalterFootball.com is proud to introduce our 2013 NFL Draft Diary with Nevada running back Stefphon Jefferson. Throughout the draft process, Stefphon will be sharing his experience with the readers of WalterFootball.com. He will hit on the team interviews, the NFL Scouting Combine, his pro day, pre-draft visits, and of course, his draft-day experience.
Jefferson finished second in the nation in rushing in 2012 with 1,883 yards. He led the country with 24 rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.02 yards per carry. He also was a factor in the passing game, chipping in 22 receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown. After his prolific season, Jefferson decided to enter the 2013 NFL Draft.

WalterFootball.com would like to thank Stefphon Jefferson for his participation. We would also like to thank Stefphon’s agent Kelli Masters of KMM Sports for helping to facilitate Stefphon’s draft diary. Jefferson and Masters are readers of WalterFootball.com, so it was a natural fit to approach them about having Stefphon’s draft diary here. We are thrilled to have Stefphon share his journey with all of you. Now, let’s allow Stefphon take over.

I’m fresh off the combine and gearing up for my pro day. Overall the combine was great and I had a great time. It was really cool to interact with the guys and meet all the big-name players. It was really fun. I wasn’t going to complain about the whole process, I just enjoyed every bit of it. That approach really helped me and I loved it.

It was all mental. Everyone was like this is tiring and a long day. A lot of guys were complaining about it, but the biggest thing for me was I didn’t want to miss out on any part of the combine. It is a great experience. Not a lot of people get to go to the combine, and I just took all of it on and enjoyed it.

It was fun being with the other running backs through it all. There were two that really stood out to me. Johnathan Franklin from UCLA and Marcus Lattimore from South Carolina were great guys. They are both really humble. They weren’t trying to be superstars or cocky or anything like that. I had great conversations with both of them. They’re really humble in how they carry themselves and they’re just good people. It was fun getting to know them.

The workouts went well. I went in there and I wasn’t too worried about my times. The biggest thing for me was to get to know the coaches. I was well prepared for the work out. Each drill I did was ready for and did whatever I could.

The biggest disappointment for me was the 40. I don’t know what it was if it was the different turf or if I was nervous or anything, that was only part I really want to improve on for my pro day coming up. I’m excited to go out there and run a better time.

The interviews at night were cool. They were all great interviews. I went in there to just be myself. I didn’t want to be a guy that was trying to be something I’m not. I went in there to be myself. They asked me a lot of background information and wanted to get to know me. I just wanted to show them what I’m all about.

All of the teams I interviewed with gave me a lot of good wisdom. The teams that really stood out to me were the Bengals, Bears and Ravens. With the Ravens scouts, I had a great time. We were talking about how training was going down in Naples, Florida. I told them about the scripture that Ignition based their whole program on. That was Proverbs 27:17 “An iron sharpens iron and a man sharpens another man.”

I was telling them about that and the Ravens’ coaches told me they based their whole season on that scripture also. That was really cool and it was a fun conversation.

The Bengals, I really liked their coaches. We had a great conversation and it wasn’t just about football. We were connecting and I was impressed with them and I’ve heard they were impressed with me.

The combine is known for some crazy questions. The craziest questions I was asked were how serious are you with your girlfriend. They asked if she would get in the way. It was crazy because every team asked it. They were really drilling for background information.

My pro day preparation is my focus right now. I’m going to do the 40, the vertical and the shuttle along with the position work out. It is another step on the journey, and so far I’m having a blast.
