Why Undrafted?: Kapri Bibbs, RB, Colorado State
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell
One of the breakout stars of college football in 2013 was Bibbs. After playing in the junior college ranks, he was a bellcow back for Colorado State in 2013. Bibbs averaged 6.2 yards per carry for 1,741 yards with 31 touchdowns on the ground. He only had eight receptions for 59 yards. The 5-foot-9, 212-pounder has strength to get yards after contact to go along with a downhill running style. Many thought Bibbs would be a mid-round pick, but he went undrafted after deciding to skip his senior year.
There were a few reasons why Bibbs went undrafted. The biggest issue was medical. He suffered a turf toe injury last season that hasn’t healed, and he currently is still dealing the injury. Teams were worried about the injury lingering and holding Bibbs back from playing.
Bibbs also was considered extremely raw in the passing game. With blitz protection being critical for running backs, teams felt Bibbs needed a lot of work before they could trust their quarterbacks’ health in his hands. Bibbs had one good season in college, but he didn’t have enough of a track record of development. Returning to school and evolving would have been a better decision for him.
Bibbs made a good choice in signing with Denver. The Broncos let Knowshon Moreno leave in free agency. They’re forcing Montee Ball into the starting lineup, but Ball wasn’t impressive as a rookie and entered the NFL with a lot of wear-and-tear. Ronnie Hillman hasn’t impressed either. If healthy, Bibbs could end up being a nice grinder back to rack up carries late in games when Denver is running the clock out. The Broncos could use a back with some power, and Bibbs brings that to their backfield. It wouldn’t be surprising if he makes Denver’s roster and ends up contributing in his role – if he can get over the turf toe injury.
