Emery Jones Jr. Prospect Preview
By Charlie Campbell
Career Recap:
It is uncommon to have true freshmen starting immediately in the SEC, and it showed the special talent level of the Tiger’s offensive tackle tandem to have them starting as true freshmen during the 2022 season. With Will Campbell at left tackle, Jones was the plug-and-play starter for the Tigers on the right side. Like his teammate, Jones played well in his first season and showed improvement. They were both even better as sophomores, providing excellent blocking to help quarterback Jayden Daniels win the Heisman Trophy.
2024 Season Outlook::
Jones is going to see some quality competition as a junior. The best games to watch him include Ole Miss (Oct. 12), Arkansas (Oct. 19), Texas A&M (Oct. 26), Alabama (Nov. 9), and Oklahoma (Nov. 30).
Prospect Summary:
Assuming Jones stays healthy and enters the draft, he will come to the NFL with three seasons of starting experience against good competition. Jones has the talent level to compete immediately at the pro level, and before long, he could be a good starter.
There is no doubt that Jones is a significant physical presence at the point of attack. He has a strong build and plays with a mean streak at the point of attack. Jones has the power to knock defenders off the ball, and he will block through the whistle. When Jones gets defenders on the ground, he quickly pancakes them and punishes them with some vicious hits. Jones has enough quickness and athleticism to move on zone-blocking plays, but he does lose body control and has the wheels come off in space. As a pro, Jones should be a solid contributor as a run blocker.
In pass protection, Jones is steady and reliable. He can kick slide to take away the edge from speed rushers and has enough size to hold up against bull rushes. Thanks to a strong upper body, Jones sustains blocks well and defenders struggle to shed him once Jones latches on. Jones can get in trouble when his weight gets over his toes, and he lunges after defenders. With bending at the waist sometimes, Jones looks like a fit at right tackle as a pro and does not look like a player to move to the left side. Jones has the potential to get better with coaching on technique and improving his feet so he doesn’t have to reach for rushers.
Jones could be a starting right tackle early in his pro career, and he could also start at guard. Jones took some snaps at guard and looked good on the inside as well.
2025 NFL Draft Expectations:
Entering the 2024 season, Jones looks like he has early-round potential for the 2025 NFL Draft.
