Entering and during the 2024 college football season, there has been an open question about who the top quarterback prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft is. Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders was our top-ranked quarterback prospect entering the season and has remained No. 1 all year. Sanders is the likely top prospect, but a lot can change in the lead-up to the draft. One quarterback prospect who has been in the running to be a first-round pick is Texas’ Quinn Ewers. Ewers led the Longhorns to the college football playoff last year, leading the program back to being a national championship contender. However, in speaking to multiple team sources, they see a problem in Ewers as a pro prospect for the NFL, and that is a lack of poise.
“He has good arm talent, his mechanics are good, but he gets timid and skittish in the pocket,” said an AFC national scout. “I don’t think he processes at an elite level, and Texas does a lot [schematically] to protect him.”
“I like him,” said an AFC director of player personnel. “He throws with anticipation, gets the ball out, has a quick release, and has arm talent. But getting rattled in the Georgia game was concerning to me.”
In 2024, Ewers completed 68 percent of his passes for 1,898 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. In 2023, Ewers completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder could help himself by showing more poise in pressure situations to close out the 2024 regular season and in the college football playoff, which Texas looks very likely to qualify for. In my latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft, I have Ewers going in the first round, but showing more composure against tough opponents to close out this season will help to make that projection a more certain reality.
