2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Willie Cauley-Stein

Position: Center

Size: 7-0, 244

School: Kentucky, Sophomore

Strengths:
  • Size
  • Length
  • Athleticism
  • Shot-blocking
  • Rim protector
  • Help-side defender
  • Explosive at the rim
  • Active on the glass
  • Bothersome in passing lanes
  • Brings constant aggressiveness/energy to the floor
  • Lateral quickness as a perimeter defender
  • Runs the floor well
  • Loaded with potential

  • Weaknesses:
  • Very raw on the offensive end
  • Mid-range jump shot
  • Back to the basket game
  • Ball-handling
  • Needs to get stronger

  • Summary: Cauley-Stein is already a beast defensively in the paint, which for a true seven-footer makes him a likely lottery pick. He is extremely active on the inside and though not even close to being a complete offensive player and still very much a work in progress, will certainly be one of the first big men off the board.

    Player Comparison: Robin Lopez.

Lopez has made his presence felt in the middle as a rebounder and rim-protector, and that will be Cauley-Stein’s calling card in the NBA as well. Lopez is still fairly limited on the offensive end which can also be said of the Wildcat sophomore.
