2014 NBA Draft Scouting Report: JaKarr Sampson

Position: Small Forward

Size: 6-9, 214

School: St. John’s, Sophomore

Strengths:
  • Athleticism
  • Explosive at the rim
  • Quick leaper
  • Length
  • Mid-range game
  • Straight-line driver
  • Solid rebounder
  • Lateral quickness

  • Weaknesses:
  • Strength
  • Three-point shooting
  • Free-throw shooting
  • Breaking down defenders in isolation situations
  • Ball handling

  • Summary: Simply put, Sampson made an awful decision by declaring for the NBA Draft. While he is athletic and has ideal size for the next level, he is nowhere near ready to be playing in the NBA and actually took a slight step back during his sophomore campaign. Sampson figures to go undrafted and will be playing in the D-Leauge or overseas next year.

Player Comparison: Quincy Miller. Similar in size and physique, Miller left school too early and just hasn’t proven to be ready to contribute on a regular basis at the NBA level. Miller is actually more skilled and versatile on the offensive end, so Sampson faces an even steeper challenge than Miller to crack an NBA roster.
