2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Kelly Olynyk

Position: Center

Size: 7-0, 234

School: Gonzaga, Junior

Strengths:
  • Good skill set as a post threat
  • Footwork on the block
  • Variety of moves with his back-to-the-basket game
  • Very efficient scorer
  • Great touch around the rim
  • Range out to the 3-point line
  • Face up threat
  • Handles the ball well for his size
  • Can drive past slower defenders

  • Weaknesses:
  • Physicality/strength
  • Athleticism
  • Explosiveness at the rim
  • Not a great shot blocker or defender
  • Toughness on the glass

  • Summary: Olynyk went from an unknown redshirt to one of the most skilled big men in college basketball this past season for Gonzaga. As a result, he emerged as a legitimate lottery prospect due to his size and skill for a seven-footer.

Player Comparison: Spencer Hawes. Like Hawes, Olynyk is more of a finesse big man than an intimidating physical presence. They can both score in a variety of ways including stepping out and knocking down jumpers. Hawes is better suited as a role player and like Olynyk doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table defensively.
