Multiple Sources Think Sellers Should Go Back

Entering the 2025 college football season, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers was among the top contenders to be the top quarterback prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft. Sellers played well to close out the 2024 season, his first year as a starter, and showed an excellent skill set with a ton of potential. However, Sellers has not been dominating the competition thus far in 2025. In speaking with multiple sources at NFL teams, they think that Sellers should return to South Carolina to get better before going to the NFL.

“He should go back,” said an AFC national scout. “He has lots of talent, but you would be drafting him based on the potential. [Anthony Richardson] is who he reminds me of, unfortunately.“

The belief that Sellers should return to South Carolina or college football next year was echoed by sources at other teams. They feel that while Sellers has a great arm and dynamic running ability, he is very raw and needs a lot of refinement as a passer for the NFL. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Sellers does not look significantly developed compared to 2024. Last year, Sellers completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdown passes, seven interceptions, and seven rushing touchdowns. This year, Sellers has completed 67 percent of his passes for 886 yards with four touchdowns passing, one interception, and one rushing.

Some team sources think that other quarterback prospects like Oregon’s Dante Moore and Oklahoma’s John Mateer could end up being rated higher than Sellers. There are still a lot of games to be played, so others could jump Sellers as well. However, Sellers also could catch fire and improve his draft projection. In my latest 2026 NFL Mock Draft, I still have Sellers going early even though he is a raw quarterback. That didn’t stop the Colts from taking Richardson with the fourth-overall pick. Sources think Sellers could still be a high first-rounder, and he could definitely come out, but they think, as far as his future and having a good pro career, he should go back to college next year and develop before going to the NFL.
