Jean Fugett: Around the NFL
By Jean Fugett; thanks to Charlie Campbell – @draftcampbell
WalterFootball.com is proud to partner with former Redskins and Cowboys tight end Jean Fugett, Jr. Esq. Fugett grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and attended Amherst College. He was the last pick of the 13th round in the 1972 NFL Draft. Fugett made the Cowboys as a backup to future Hall of Famer Mike Ditka. Fugett eventually became a starter for Tom Landry’s Cowboys and started in Super Bowl X. He made the Pro Bowl in 1977.
As a free agent, Fugett went from being the lowest-paid starting tight end to the highest-paid with the Washington Redskins. While playing for legendary Redskins coach George Allen, Fugett attended law school at George Washington University at night.
During and after his playing days, Fugett worked with CBS, the Washington Post and other media. He went on to serve as Director and Vice-Chair of the McCall Pattern Company Management Committee, founded a Baltimore law firm and partnered with Fanfone in Europe. After the death of his brother Reginald F. Lewis in 1993, Fugett took over TLC Beatrice International Foods, the largest black-owned and black-managed business in the world at the time. Fugett has served on committees with the NFL Players Association and on the Leadership Council for the American Diabetes Association Maryland Chapter. |

WalterFootball.com would like to thank Redskins general manager Bruce Allen and senior vice president/executive producer of media Larry Michael for connecting us to Fugett. Now, let’s let Jean take over.
Offensive Player of the Week: Marshawn Lynch, running back, Seattle Seahawks
Defensive Player of the Week: Joe Haden, cornerback, Cleveland Browns
Coach of the Week: Mike Pettine, head coach, St. Louis Rams
Goat of the Week: Marc Trestman, head coach, Chicago Bears
The passing records continue to be assaulted in every way imaginable. According to one report, Peyton Manning threw five touchdown passes in 17 minutes. Something is wrong with this picture. He is a great Hall of Famer, but five touchdown passes in 17 minutes? The NFL has become a pinball video arcade game with live players. Teams that are adapting well to this brave new world flourish. What do you think?

Last Week in the AFC –
In our rankings of the AFC North, we have Cleveland on top, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati tied in the middle, and Baltimore at the bottom – just as they stand this week. It will hurt the Ravens that the schedule had them playing so many division games in the first half of the season.
The NFL would be way more interesting if, like baseball, teams played division games only at the end of the season. That is how division champions should be determined.
Michael Vick was almost our player of the week with the game he had firing up the Jets defense; a defense that is the worst in that division and was giving up the most points going into the game. The way that Pittsburgh and Ben Roethlisberger were playing, another fifty Steeler points were well in order. Pittsburgh’s comeback win never materialized; 10 points in the fourth quarter was not enough. You have to question the consistency and focus of the Steelers. How can they lose to Tampa Bay at home and now the Jets? It was a surprise watching the Jets shut down the high-scoring Pittsburgh offense and served as a reminder of that Rex Ryan New York defense the NFL feared.
It was good for New York City for the Jets to finally get a win because the Giants, well, never mind. Buffalo and Miami look to both end up around .500 this season. Miami had a chance to make a statement against Detroit but could not; while the Lion’s big comeback bodes well for the division leader as they head to the wire. As a result, New England has the AFC East locked up in early Novemberagain.
In the South, the Colts and Texans had bye weeks. The Titans played poorly against the Ravens, while the Jaguars lost and will continue to lose.
Kansas City may be the team that joins Denver from the AFC West in the playoffs. San Diego still has an outside shot, but the Chargers have not played well at all recently. They have lot of road miles this year.
Last Week in the NFC –
The Eagles will probably have difficulty continuing in the playoff race with Mark Sanchez as their leader, although, the experts can be wrong. Chip Kelly has been known to be able to coach ’em up. The Giants and Washington are eliminated while the Eagles really soared against the embarrassment of a Carolina team.
Tony Romo deserves a lot of praise. The fact that Tony Romo could fly across the Atlantic, do press conferences, sign autographs and throw three touchdowns on the Jaguars is excellent. Maybe if it was a different quarterback or team, he would get more credit, but his performance was highly impressive. DeMarco Murray put up another 100 yards. That has to make you think that in the NFC the Cowboys are really looking good to go all the way this year.
The Cardinals are the team to beat now in the NFC. Coach Bruce Arians went 2-1 without Palmer earlier and believes that he can win with Drew Stanton. We will have to see about that.
The 49ers won a must-win, and it was the kind of game that could kill New Orleans’ season and turn San Francisco’s season around. The 49ers have an unusual collection of players with a lot of experience and could ignite for a seven-game run. Seattle is knocking on the door for our top five in the NFC and trying to build momentum after the Harvin fiasco.
The Falcons have played poorly for most of this season, and yet, Atlanta is only one game out of first place. Almost two months without a victory and the Falcons finally get one! The Dirty Birds are trending north. It is amazing what one victory can do for a team. The Saints have to be concerned about Atlanta. It is amazing what a big loss at home can do to a team – like New Orleans -that has been struggling all year.
The way the Lions scored 10 in the fourth quarter firmly established them as one of the favorites to go deep into the playoffs. With Green Bay right behind them at 6-3, those teams will make for a good fight to win the NFC North. The performance of Matthew Stafford, with Megatron coming back and Ndamukong Suh not getting thrown out of any games, bodes well for the future of of Detroit. Minnesota and Chicago are virtually eliminated. The Bears have to be looking for a new coach. It was reported that they have been outscored 94-7 over the last three games. Yikes!
