2025 NFL Free Agent Team Grades: NFC East
Dallas Cowboys: F

This has been a bizarre offseason for the Cowboys. It began by just allowing Mike McCarthy’s contract to expire without any sort of plan. Brian Schottenheimer, a thrice-fired offensive coordinator, was then hired to take McCarthy’s place. Dallas then proceeded by signing a bunch of disappointing players to 1-year deal, perhaps hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with one or two of them. It’s doubtful that this strategy will work.
I gave the Cowboys an “F” last year in this spot, and I’m doing that again. This has been a failure of a free agency period.
New York Giants: C+
Acquired: OT James Hudson, OT Stone Forsythe, DT Roy Robertson-Harris, OLB Chauncey Golston, LB Chris Board, CB Paulson Adebo, S Jevon Holland.
Lost: QB Drew Lock, OLB Azeez Ojulari, CB Adoree Jackson, S Jason Pinnock.
Giants fans watched Saquon Barkley lead one of their top rivals to a Super Bowl victory. If the front office wanted to make their fanbase forget about this horrible misstep, it didn’t do a very good job this offseason. In fact, two former Giants may end up assisting Barkley in Philadelphia, as both Adoree Jackson and Azeez Ojulari signed with the Eagles.
However, this offseason was not a total flop. The Giants strengthened their secondary by signing Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland. Adebo was a bit of an overpay, but the Giants definitely got stronger in one of their weaker areas.
Philadelphia Eagles: B+
Acquired: QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, RB A.J. Dillon, TE Harrison Bryant, TE Kylen Granson, G Kenyon Green, OLB Azeez Ojulari, OLB Josh Uche, CB Adoree Jackson.
Lost: QB Kenny Pickett, RB Kenneth Gainwell, G Mekhi Becton, DE Josh Sweat, DE Brandon Graham, DT Milton Williams, LB Oren Burks, CB Darius Slay, CB Garrett Bradbury, CB Avonte Maddox, CB Isaiah Rodgers.
The Eagles earned an “A” grade last year, thanks to their signing of Saquon Barkley. They didn’t make a big splash this year, but they were able to go shopping for bargains instead. They signed a bunch of capable players to cheap, 1-year deals, including Azeez Ojulari, Adoree Jackson, and a couple of tight ends. None of these players will make the Eagles much better by themselves, but collectively, they’ll be able to make the Eagles deeper despite the departure of some known free agents, namely Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and Darius Slay.
All in all, this was a mostly positive free agency period for the Eagles. They can’t be graded in the “A” range, but a B+ seems warranted.
Washington Redskins: A-

Lost: WR Dyami Brown, WR Olamide Zaccheaus, OT Cornelius Lucas, OT Trenton Scott, G Michael Deiter, DE Dante Fowler, DE Clelin Ferrell, OLB Mykal Walker, CB Benjamin St-Juste, S Jeremy Chinn.
The Redskins entered free agency as one of my favorite value bets to win the Super Bowl. I was hoping that with their massive amount of cap space, they would make enough positive moves to justify my selection.
I’m currently happy with my bets. The Redskins made an error by giving Javon Kinlaw lots of money, but every other transaction was a positive. Trading for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil will aid Jayden Daniels as he enters his second season. The Redskins still need an edge rusher, but they still have enough money to address that position.
2025 NFL Free Agent Team Grades: AFC East
Buffalo Bills: A-
Acquired: WR Joshua Palmer, G Kendrick Green, DE Joey Bosa, DE Michael Hoecht, DT Larry Ogunjobi, CB Dane Jackson, S Darrick Forrest, P Jake Camarda.
Lost: WR Amari Cooper, WR Mack Hollins, DE Dawuane Smoot, DT Quinton Jefferson, DT Jordan Phillips, DT Austin Johnson, CB Rasul Douglas, P Sam Martin.
The Bills may not have found their solution at receiver, but they made a huge signing in free agency that could elevate them over the Chiefs. That was the acquisition of Joey Bosa. The long-time Charger has battled many injuries throughout his career, but when he’s healthy, he’s a dynamic pass rusher who will be able to constantly pressure Patrick Mahomes.
Buffalo’s other top free agent signing, Joshua Palmer, is also a former Charger. He played well a couple of years ago, but had a dud season in 2024. Still, there’s a chance that he could become a reliable weapon for Josh Allen, though that currently seems like an overpay. Still, the Bills deserve a good grade overall because of the upside that comes with Bosa.
Miami Dolphins: B
Acquired: QB Zach Wilson, RB Alexander Mattison, WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, OT Larry Borom, G James Daniels, LB Willie Gay, LB K.J. Britt, CB Artie Burns, S Ifeatu Melifonwu, S Ashtyn Davis.
Lost: QB Tyler Huntley, RB Raheem Mostert, OT Kendall Lamm, G Robert Jones, DE Emmanuel Ogbah, LB Anthony Walker, CB Kendall Fuller, S Jevon Holland, S Jordan Poyer.
Miami’s primary goal entering this offseason was to bolster the interior of the offensive line. The front office managed to sign just one player to address that area, but the signing was a banger. James Daniels is a terrific guard and will provide an enormous upgrade at the position.
Only one other signing will offer a big impact. That would be Ifeatu Melifonwu, a talented, young safety. However, Melifonwu figures to be a slight downgrade from the departed Jevon Holland, so that wasn’t even a lateral move.
Still, the addition of Daniels is a huge deal. He, alone, is not enough to fix the blocking woes, but signing him was a great decision.
New England Patriots: D

Lost: QB Jacoby Brissett, C David Andrews, DE Deatrich Wise, LB Sione Takitaki, CB Jonathan Jones, K Joey Slye.
This was a massively disappointing offseason for the Patriots. They entered free agency with the most cap space in the NFL, but they didn’t make any franchise-altering transactions. Harold Landry comes close, but he’s nearing 30, so regression could be coming soon for him. Still, this was an excellent signing, as Landry will reuinite with his former head coach, Mike Vrabel.
The Patriots made two other big-money signings, inking Milton Williams and Carlton Davis to colossal deals. Williams has loads of potential, but has never been a full-time player in the NFL. Davis, meanwhile, was an abysmal cornerback a couple of years ago. Aaron Glenn revived his career, but Glenn didn’t come to New England in a package with Davis.
Worse yet, the Patriots barely touched their offensive line. They added a couple of reserve-caliber players, but they won’t strengthen Drake Maye’s pass protection. If the Patriots don’t draft a tackle at No. 4 overall, Maye is going to have a difficult time remaining upright in 2025.
New York Jets: B
Acquired: QB Justin Fields, FB Andrew Beck, WR Tyler Johnson, TE Stone Smartt, C Josh Myers, DT Derrick Nnadi, DT Byron Cowart, CB Brandon Stephens, S Andre Cisco.
Lost: QB Aaron Rodgers, WR Davante Adams, TE Tyler Conklin, OT Tyron Smith, DE Solomon Thomas, DT Javon Kinlaw, DT Javon Kinlaw, OLB Haason Reddick, LB, C.J. Mosley, CB D.J. Reed, S Chuck Clark, S Ashtyn Davis.
The Jets have been going all in with Aaron Rodgers the past couple of years. They’ve now had to make the awkward transition to building for the long term in such a short time frame. The signings they’ve made have mostly been young players with upside. This includes Justin Fields, who has a chance to live up to his potential. If he doesn’t, the Jets won’t be very penalized for it. In fact, they’ll stand to benefit with a better draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft (go here for my 2026 NFL Mock Draft.)
Outside of Fields, the players with the most potential are Stone Smartt, Andre Cisco, and Brandon Stephens. They could develop into viable players for the Jets in a couple of years, and if so, they’ll help as the team finally makes another playoff push. None of these signings are amazing, but they were logical moves considering the new goals of the team.
2025 NFL Free Agent Team Grades: NFC North
Chicago Bears: A+
Acquired: WR Olamide Zaccheaus, G Joe Thuney, G Jonah Jackson, C Drew Dalman, DE Dayo Odeyingbo, DT Grady Jarrett.
Lost: WR Keenan Allen, TE Gerald Everett, TE Marcedes Lewis, OT Larry Borom, G Teven Jenkins, C Coleman Shelton, DE DeMarcus Walker, DE Jacob Martin, DT Byron Cowart, LB Jack Sanborn.
The Bears entered the offseason with one of the weakest offensive lines in the NFL. There were some major concerns for Caleb Williams, but the front office recognized that and made the appropriate moves. They traded for Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, and then signed Drew Dalman in free agency. Jackson’s health is a concern, but Thuney and Dalman are massive upgrades.
Chicago wasn’t done, as the front office also acquired two defensive linemen. Grady Jarrett is on the downside of his career, but Dayo Odeyingbo should provide a needed boost to the pass rush.
The Bears did a great job of acquiring talent this offseason. They deserve an A+ for their haul.
Detroit Lions: B-
Acquired: DT Roy Lopez, CB D.J. Reed, CB Avonte Maddox, CB Rock Ya-Sin.
Lost: QB Teddy Bridgewater, DE Za’Darius Smith, CB Carlton Davis, CB Emmanuel Mosley, CB Kindle Vildor, S Ifeatu Melifonwu.
The Lions were already behind the eight ball entering free agency, given that they lost two coordinators to head-coaching jobs. They then watched two key members of the secondary – Carlton Davis, Ifeatu Melifonwu – depart.
Detroit compensated for the Davis loss by signing D.J. Reed, who should be an upgrade. The team didn’t do much else, so it can’t be graded highly.
Green Bay Packers: B
Acquired: WR Mecole Hardman, G Aaron Banks, CB Nate Hobbs.
Lost: RB A.J. Dillon, OT Andre Dillard, C Josh Myers, DT Tedarrell Slaton, LB Eric Wilson, CB Eric Stokes.
The Packers are not a team that tends to make big splashes in free agency. It happens on occasion, but they usually settle on a few new players. This year, those players were Nate Hobbs and Aaron Banks.
Both new players should be helpful. Hobbs is an outstanding slot cornerback, while Banks has been a solid guard. Both are upgrades, and it’s not like the Packers lost anyone of note this year.
Minnesota Vikings: A+
Acquired: RB Jordan Mason, WR Rondale Moore, G Will Fries, C Ryan Kelly, DT Javon Hargrave, DT Jonathan Allen, LB Eric Wilson, CB Isaiah Rodgers.
Lost: QB Nick Mullens, OT David Quessenberry, C Garrett Bradbury, DE Jonathan Bullard, DT Jerry Tillery, DT Jihad Ward, OLB Pat Jones, CB Stephon Gilmore, CB Shaq Griffin, S Camryn Bynum.
The Bears weren’t the only team in the NFC North to make huge upgrades to the interior of the offensive line. The Vikings signed two blockers away from the Colts, acquiring Ryan Kelly and Will Fries to strengthen one of the weak spots on their roster.
The Vikings also bolstered their defensive line. Jonathan Allen was an overpay, but Javon Hargrave seems to be an exceptional signing. Isaiah Rodgers was also an underrated addition.
Minnesota has one of the best rosters in the NFL, so these moves allowed it to further improve itself.
2025 NFL Free Agent Team Grades: AFC North
Baltimore Ravens: C-
Acquired: QB Cooper Rush, WR DeAndre Hopkins, LB Jake Hummel.
Lost: WR Nelson Agholor, G Patrick Mekari, LB Malik Harrison, LB Chris Board, CB Brandon Stephens, CB Tre’Davious White, CB Arthur Maulet, CB Trayvon Mullen, S Marcus Williams.
The Ravens may not have signed anyone of note aside from DeAndre Hopkins, but this offseason wasn’t a total loss for them. They made an important move in re-signing Ronnie Stanley when it was believed that he would depart via free agency.
However, that’s where the positives end. The Ravens did nothing to upgrade their poor cornerbacks or edge rush. Meanwhile, the Hopkins signing doesn’t seem very promising, given that he barely did anything with Patrick Mahomes last year.
Cincinnati Bengals: D
Acquired: RB Samaje Perine, G Lucas Patrick, DT Tedarrell Slaton, LB Oren Burks.
Lost: RB Khalil Herbert, OT Trent Brown, G Alex Cappa, DT Jay Tufele, CB Mike Hilton, S Vonn Bell.
As with the Ravens, nothing stands out in the “acquired” line for Cincinnati’s free agency haul. This didn’t mean that Cincinnati wasn’t completely inactive, however. The Bengals were able to re-sign both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to keep the elite offensive group intact.
Unfortunately for the Bengals, they didn’t touch their defense outside of a couple mediocre signings. They had one of the worst defensive units in the NFL last year, and that will continue to be the case because of ownership’s unwillingness to spend any money.
Cleveland Browns: F
Acquired: QB Kenny Pickett, FB Troy Hairston, OT Cornelius Lucas, G Teven Jenkins, DE Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, DT Maliek Collins.
Lost: QB Jameis Winston, QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, RB Nick Chubb, WR Elijah Moore, OT Jedrick Wills, OT James Hudson, C Nick Harris, DT Dalvin Tomlinson, DT Maurice Hurst, CB Mike Ford, S Juan Thornhill, S Rodney McLeod.
It’s still unclear what the Browns will do at quarterback. They traded a fifth-round pick for Kenny Pickett, but it remains to be seen if they’ll sign someone else or draft a quarterback at No. 2 overall. If it’s the former, this grade will be re-visited.
At any rate, like the Ravens and Bengals, the Browns managed to re-sign a star player, as they managed to retain Myles Garrett. Not trading him was a huge mistake, however, as Garrett will be on the downside of his career by the time Cleveland can make a playoff push. The Browns didn’t really do anything to help those playoff aspirations in free agency. Teven Jenkins is a quality player, but it’s unclear how he will fit into Cleveland’s offensive line.
Pittsburgh Steelers: B+
Acquired: QB Mason Rudolph, RB Kenneth Gainwell, WR DK Metcalf, TE Donald Parham, LB Malik Harrison, CB Darius Slay, CB Brandin Echols, S Juan Thornhill.
Lost: QB Kenny Pickett, QB Mason Rudolph, WR Diontae Johnson, C Mason Cole, DT Armon Watts, OLB Markus Golden, LB Kwon Alexander, LB Blake Martinez, CB Levi Wallace, CB Chandon Sullivan, CB James Pierre, S Patrick Peterson, S Keanu Neal.
As with the Browns, we still need clarity with what the Steelers will do at quarterback. They signed Mason Rudolph, but appear to have interest in Aaron Rodgers and some of the incoming rookies. If they sign Rodgers or another veteran, this signing grade will be adjusted.
Unlike Cleveland, the Steelers have a logical plan. They acquired DK Metcalf to make it more lucrative for a free agent quarterback to sign. Meanwhile, the defense was addressed with a couple of quality signings. Pittsburgh is definitely better than it was prior to free agency, despite the quarterbacking dilemma.
2025 NFL Free Agent Team Grades: NFC South
Atlanta Falcons: C+
Acquired: DE Morgan Fox, OLB Leonard Floyd, LB Divine Deable, S Jordan Fuller, KR Jamal Agnew.
Lost: WR Rondale Moore, C Drew Dalman, DE Matthew Judon, DT Grady Jarrett, DT Eddie Goldman, OLB Lorenzo Carter, LB Nate Landman, CB Dee Alford, S Justin Simmons, S Richie Grant.
It’s not yet clear what the Falcons plan on doing with Kirk Cousins, but we know that Michael Penix Jr. won’t be as well protected as he was last year because talented center Drew Dalman departed. No replacement has been obtained yet.
The Falcons were active on defense, however. They let go of some underachieving front-seven players and replaced them with Leonard Floyd and Morgan Fox. I wouldn’t call this a net positive with the Dalman loss, but the Falcons still have the NFL Draft to resolve that matter.
Carolina Panthers: B+
Acquired: RB Rico Dowdle, DT Tershawn Wharton, DT Bobby Brown, OLB Patrick Jones, LB Christian Rozeboom, S Tre’von Moehrig, K Matthew Wright, P Sam Martin.
Lost: TE Ian Thomas, C Brady Christiansen, LB Shaq Thompson, S Xavier Woods, S Jordan Fuller, S Nick Scott, K Eddy Pineiro, P Johnny Hekker.
The Panthers spent major resources on the interior of their offensive line last spring. This year, they added two key free agents to the interior of their defensive front. Those acquisitions were Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown. While neither is a great talent, the two will be able to help a Carolina defensive line that was pushed around very easily last year.
Carolina made a couple of other quality moves as well, signing Rico Dowdle and Tre’von Moehrig. Again, none of these players will be individually responsible for propelling the Panthers into the playoffs, but all of these signings were quality transactions that will improve the team overall.
New Orleans Saints: F
Acquired: WR Brandin Cooks, C Will Clapp, DT Davon Godchaux, CB Isaac Yiadom, S Justin Reid.
Lost: RB Jamaal Williams, WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, G Lucas Patrick, DE Payton Turner, LB Willie Gay, CB Paulson Adebo, S Will Harris.
The Saints are the NFL version of the federal reserve. They spend money recklessly and constantly kick the can down the road. They also seemed to counterfeit money this offseason. They entered the spring $65 million over the cap, yet somehow found themselves under the cap. They then handed out ridiculous contracts to Chase Young, Juwan Johnson, and Brandin Cooks.
I gave the Saints an “F” last year, and will do so again. I liked the Justin Reid signing, but that was it. The Saints need to blow up their roster and begin anew, but they keep kicking the can down the road. But no billionaires will be coming to save them.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: A-
Acquired: OT Charlie Heck, OLB Haason Reddick, LB Anthony Walker, CB Kindle Vildor, P Riley Dixon.
Lost: OT Justin Skule, C Robert Hainsey, DE William Gholston, OLB Shaq Barrett, OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, LB K.J. Britt, S Mike Edwards, S Ryan Neal.
The Buccaneers didn’t make many moves during free agency this offseason, but they went for the quality over quantity approach. They initially re-signed Chris Godwin when it was believed that Godwin would leave for Jacksonville or New England, but he re-signed with Tampa Bay. The front office then signed Haason Reddick to a 1-year contract. Given that this is a “prove it” deal, Reddick will be motivated to play his best. Meanwhile, Anthony Walker was a quality signing for the troubled linebacking corps.
Tampa Bay made just three transactions of note, but the three moves will make the team better than it was last year. Thanks to these signings, the Buccaneers should once again be considered the favorites to win the NFC South.
