2019 NFL Playoff Predictions – Wildcard Round

*** I have never made changes to my Super Bowl and playoff predictions after posting them, but one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL has never retired two weeks before the season either. I previously had the Colts winning the Super Bowl, but in the wake of Andrew Luck’s retirement, I felt the need to change my Super Bowl and playoff predictions. ***

6. Atlanta Falcons (10-6) at 3. Carolina Panthers (10-6)
The Falcons are 6-1 against the Panthers in their previous seven meetings, but the last time Cam Newton played against Atlanta at home, his team was able to prevail, 20-17. Both of these teams are great buy-low options heading into 2019, so this decision was a tough one, but the host advancing makes the most sense.

Panthers 23, Falcons 20

5. Chicago Bears (11-5) at 4. San Francisco 49ers (10-6)
Will the Bears have better kicking luck in their next playoff appearance? Perhaps, but the bigger issue is that their pass rush may not get to Jimmy Garoppolo because the 49ers have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. That might end up being the difference in this game, as the upstart 49ers move on to the divisional round of the playoffs.

49ers 16, Bears 13

6. Cleveland Browns (10-6) at 3. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5)
The Browns are finally in the playoffs! This is their first postseason appearance since the 2002 campaign. Unfortunately for the city of Cleveland, its Browns will have to battle their arch nemesis, the Steelers. It seems as though Pittsburgh has a great matchup versus Cleveland. The strength of the Browns is their ferocious defensive line, yet the Steelers have one of the best blocking units in the NFL. That’ll give Pittsburgh the edge in this third meeting.

Steelers 23, Browns 20

5. New York Jets (10-6) at 4. Jacksonville Jaguars (10-6)
The Jaguars now make the playoffs as a result of Andrew Luck’s retirement, meaning Nick Foles will once again have an opportunity to make a postseason run with a great defense. Unfortunately for Foles, he doesn’t have much on offense outside of Leonard Fournette and Dede Westbrook. His offensive line is not very good, which will be problematic against Leonard and Quinnen Williams.

Jets 17, Jaguars 16

2019 NFL Playoff Predictions – Divisional Round

4. San Francisco 49ers (10-6) at 1. Philadelphia Eagles (12-4)
Eagles-49ers was actually a predicted game in the divisional round of last year’s season previews, but Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury in Week 3 ruined the possibility of that happening. The 49ers are even better this year, but they’re a California team heading into a cold, January environment, which should end their playoff run.

Eagles 30, 49ers 16

3. Carolina Panthers (10-6) at 2. Green Bay Packers (12-4)
The Packers will have a chance to win the Super Bowl if Aaron Rodgers stays healthy. That’s a huge “if,” however. Then again, Cam Newton isn’t a lock to remain injury-free as well. Green Bay could get the nod because of the Lambeau Field advantage, but that hasn’t really been a factor in Green Bay’s recent playoff runs. In fact, Rodgers’ lone Super Bowl didn’t include any home affairs. The Panthers seem to match up well versus Green Bay, as the Packer linebackers will have an issue containing Christian McCaffrey.

Panthers 27, Packers 24

5. New York Jets (10-6) at 1. Kansas City Chiefs (13-3)
The Jets are a great story, and Sam Darnold is a legitimate MVP candidate. Unfortunately for Darnold and the Jets, their 2019 season ends in Arrowhead, as keeping up with Patrick Mahomes will be extremely difficult. Mahomes will exploit the weaknesses in New York’s secondary and put together a stellar passing performance.

Chiefs 41, Jets 24

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) at 2. New England Patriots (11-5)
The Patriots have owned the Steelers over the years, but things have changed recently ever since Pittsburgh altered its defense. Tom Brady can no longer pick the Steelers apart, which could give Pittsburgh an unexpected edge in this contest. Tom Brady goes down at home in an absolute shocker.

Steelers 27, Patriots 24

2019 NFL Playoff Predictions – Championship Sunday

3. Carolina Panthers (10-6) at 1. Philadelphia Eagles (12-4)
Sixteen years ago, the Panthers went into Philadelphia and won the NFC Championship. Philadelphia’s quarterback at the time, Donovan McNabb, was also known for choking in big moments. It’s unclear if Carson Wentz will follow the same trajectory, but his football IQ is off the charts, and if he’s healthy, he’ll have a good chance of leading his team to the Super Bowl. His passing ability will be problematic for the Panthers, as their greatest weakness is their secondary.

Eagles 27, Panthers 24

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) at 1. Kansas City Chiefs (13-3)
It took an amazing fourth quarter and overtime from the greatest quarterback of all time, an offsides penalty and a coin toss to defeat Patrick Mahomes in the AFC Championship last year. In other words, the Steelers probably won’t be able to replicate what New England was able to accomplish. There won’t be any stopping Mahomes this time, as Mahomes will be able to exploit the weaknesses in Pittsburgh’s secondary.

Chiefs 34, Steelers 27

2019 NFL Playoff Predictions – Super Bowl LIV at Miami

Philadelphia Eagles (12-4) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (13-3)
It’s the Andy Reid Bowl! I imagine this game will be much explosive than last year’s defensive battle between the Patriots and Rams. The total of this championship may not go into the 60s, but it will surely be greater than 16!

One byproduct of changing this Super Bowl prediction in the wake of Andrew Luck’s retirement is that another adjustment can be made. When these previews were posted back in July, it was unclear what would happen with Tyreek Hill. It has since been announced that Hill will not be suspended, which is a huge boost for Kansas City’s outlook.

The Chiefs have a slight edge in this matchup, as Hill’s presence won’t allow the Eagles to focus entirely on Travis Kelce and the receiving running backs Kansas City has in its backfield. The Eagles could struggle with that aspect of Kansas City’s offense, so Andy Reid will likely exploit that liability.

This figures to be a close game, but this prediction has Reid finally winning the Lombardi Trophy.

Chiefs 30, Eagles 27
