2009 Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2009.

Jordan Gross, Panthers. Age: 29.
Re-signed with Panthers (6 years, $60 million; $35 million guaranteed)

Jordan Gross surrendered three sacks in 2008, qualifying for the Pro Bowl. The Panthers will have to decide between franchising Gross or Julius Peppers, so there’s a good chance the former hits the market.
Tyson Clabo (RFA), Falcons. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Falcons (1 year, $1.545 million)

Tyson Clabo really stepped up and emerged as a solid right tackle for the Falcons this year.
Orlando Pace, Rams. Age: 33.
Signed with Bears

The Rams had to cut Orlando Pace because he was making a ridiculous amount of money. At 33, Pace is still very effective – assuming he’s healthy. Pace has missed 25 games the past three years.
Vernon Carey, Dolphins. Age: 28.
Re-signed with Dolphins (6 years, $42 million)

Vernon Carey has proven that he can be effective at both left and right tackle. Given the high demand for tackles in the NFL right now, some team is going to vastly overpay for Carey – and I can’t really blame them for doing so.
William Tra Thomas, Eagles. Age: 34.
Signed with Jaguars (3 years)

William Tra Thomas turns 35 in November. He played really well this season, surrendering just two sacks, but he’s a huge risk because of his age.
Ray Willis, Seahawks. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Seahawks (2 years)

Ray Willis started 10 games and gave up 1.5 sacks. He showed enough promise this season to be a solid right tackle down the road.
Donald Penn (RFA), Buccaneers. Age: 26.
Re-signed with Buccaneers (1 year)

Despite starting the season well, Donald Penn allowed 8.5 sacks in 2008. The Buccaneers have a lot of needs, so Penn should be back for one more year.
Khalif Barnes, Jaguars. Age: 27.
Signed with Raiders (1 year)

What happened to this guy? Khalif Barnes had a brilliant rookie year, but has since completely fallen apart. He gave up 7.5 sacks and was whistled for nine penalties in 2008. Maybe a change of scenery will help him.
Max Starks, Steelers. Age: 27.
Re-signed with Steelers (4 years, $26.3 million)

A run-of-the-mill left tackle who allowed four sacks in 10 games. He’ll be overpaid because the market value is very tackle-friendly right now.
Willie Colon (RFA), Steelers. Age: 26.
Re-signed with Steelers (1 year)

Another pedestrian player the Steelers have on their front. Willie Colon will likely be retained with a tender.
Jon Stinchcomb, Saints. Age: 30.
Re-signed with Saints (5 years)

An adequate right tackle with starting experience, Jon Stinchcomb could find work as a reliable backup if he’s not retained by the Saints.
Daniel Loper, Titans. Age: 27.
Signed with Lions

One of the top backup linemen in the NFL. Daniel Loper can play tackle and guard.
Marvel Smith, Steelers. Age: 31.
Signed with 49ers (2 years, $10.5 million)

Very unreliable. Marvel Smith has chronic back problems, and has consequently missed 15 games in the past two seasons and 29 games since 2003.
Kevin Shaffer, Browns. Age: 29.
Signed with Bears

One of the weakest links on Cleveland’s offensive line, but not a huge liability either. Kevin Shaffer will find a job as a spot-starter at the very least.
Mark Tauscher, Packers. Age: 32.
Re-signed with Packers

Mark Tauscher tore his ACL in December. At 32, he’s a risky multi-year signing.
Stacy Andrews, Bengals. Age: 28.
Signed with Eagles

Stacy Andrews tore his ACL and MCL, and there is no reason to believe that he’ll be ready for the 2009 opener. Andrews was a mediocre player before the injury; he gave up 9.5 sacks in 15 games last year.
Zach Strief (RFA), Saints. Age: 25.
Re-signed with Saints (1 year, $1.545 million)

Zach Strief played well in relief this season, but he’s probably not starting-material.
Levi Jones, Bengals. Age: 30.
Signed with Redskins

Old and injured – not a good combination. There’s a reason the Bengals spent the No. 6 overall pick on a left tackle.
Ryan O’Callaghan, Patriots. Age: 26.
Signed with Chiefs

Should be a solid reserve tackle for his next team.
Jon Runyan, Eagles. Age: 35.
Signed with Chargers

After an OK start, Jon Runyan really struggled down the stretch. Perhaps he can bribe Andy Reid with a few cheesesteaks and receive a short-term deal, but he’s playing on his last legs right now.
John St. Clair, Bears. Age: 32.
Signed with Browns (3 years, $9 million)

John St. Clair is as good as gone; he gave up the third-most sacks in the NFL of all left tackles. He’s nothing more than a solid backup at this point.
Frank Omiyale, Panthers. Age: 26. – Signed with Bears (4 years, $14 million)
