2010 Free Agents: Tight Ends

MISSING

2010 Free Agency: Star rating is out of five. Age listing as of Sept. 1, 2010.

  1. Owen Daniels (RFA), TE, Texans. Age: 27.
    Re-signed with Texans (1 year, $3.1 million)

Owen Daniels is one of the most talented tight ends in the NFL. However, he now has three ACL tears in his football career, so that’s a huge concern.

  2. Tony Scheffler (RFA), TE, Broncos. Age: 27.
    Traded to Lions

Tony Scheffler didn’t do much in 2009 because he’s way too talented for Josh McDaniels’ incredible offense. Scheffler will resurface once he lands on a team with a coach who understands how to utilize good players properly.

  3. Jeff King (RFA), TE, Panthers. Age: 27.
    Re-signed with Panthers (1 year, $1.7 million)

A solid blocker, but not much of a threat as a receiver.

  4. Alge Crumpler, TE, Titans. Age: 32.
    Signed with Patriots

Alge Crumpler is no longer a pass-catching option, but he’s a very good blocker for a tight end.

  5. David Thomas (RFA), TE, Saints. Age: 27.
    Re-signed with Saints (1 year, $1.1 million)

Played very well in relief of Jeremy Shockey this season. Caught eight balls for 77 yards in a loss to Dallas.

  6. Bo Scaife (RFA), TE, Titans. Age: 29.
    Re-signed with Titans (1 year, $4.9 million)

A favorite target of Vince Young’s, Bo Scaife caught at least four passes in five of his last seven games.

  7. Ben Hartsock, TE, Jets. Age: 30.
    Re-signed with Jets

Not a factor in the passing game, but a quality blocker.

  8. Ben Watson, TE, Patriots. Age: 29.
Signed with Browns (3 years, $12 million; $6.3 million guaranteed)

Ben Watson caught 29 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns in his contract year. Time for the Patriots to move on.

  9. Chris Baker, TE, Patriots. Age: 30.
Signed with Seahawks (2 years, $4.7 million)

A good blocker, but a complete non-factor in the passing game.

  10. Derek Schouman, TE, Bills. Age: 25.
Sometimes life isn’t fair. Derek Schouman was having the game of his life (6 catches, 62 yards) in Week 2, but suffered a season-ending knee injury.

  11. Randy McMichael, TE, Rams. Age: 31.
    Signed with Chargers (1 year)

Randy McMichael caught more than three passes in a game only once all year. He also averaged a depressing 9.8 yards per reception.

  12. J.P. Foschi (RFA), TE, Bengals. Age: 28.
    Signed with Bills

A decent blocker, but not a pass-catching threat outside of his 82-yard game against the Chargers in December.

  13. Billy Miller, TE, Saints. Age: 33.
Billy Miller missed all of 2009 because of a torn Achilles.
