2013 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Landry Jones

Career Recap: Jones is an experienced college starter that still has something to prove entering his senior season. When Sam Bradford was injured in 2009, the true freshman Jones was pressed into starting duty and performed well. He completed 58.1 percent of his passes for 3,198 yards, 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. In 2010, Jones made big strides as a sophomore when he completed 65 percent of his passes for 4,718 yards with 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Entering his junior year in 2011, expectations were extremely high for Jones to lead Oklahoma to contend for a National Championship. He completed 63 percent of his passes in 2011 for 4,463 yards with 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He destroyed Texas and Kansas State last year, but had bad games against Baylor and Oklahoma State in losses that sunk the Sooners’ season. He lost some touchdown throws due to Oklahoma putting in backup quarterback Blake Bell to run the ball into the end zone. The losses against the Bears and the Cowboys bring into question whether or not Jones possesses the “it” factor to push his team to a win.

2012 Season Outlook: Jones debated whether to return for his senior season. He met with the Oklahoma coaching staff, and they convinced him to come back for another year. It will be interesting to see if Jones is removed from games in scoring situations. WalterFootball.com has heard that didn’t sit well with Jones, and he voiced that to the coaching staff before making his decision to return for his senior campaign. They came to an understanding, and Jones decided to play the 2012 season in the college ranks.

Jones plays in a conference that has few quality defenses. With good receivers like Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds, Jones should have big production in 2012. Big production won’t be enough though, as Jones needs to win some big games and play well in crunch time.

Skill-Set Summary: There is no question that Jones has the skill set of a starting quarterback at any level. He has a strong arm and real pocket presence. He is an accurate passer with the power to make all the throws. If given time to throw, Jones will pick apart a defense. However, he does not bring mobility to the table and it not a running threat.

2013 Draft Expectations: Jones has the skill set of first-round pick, but he may not have the intangibles to crack the top 32. Jones could fall into the second round, but he should definitely should go in the top two rounds. If he has a big senior season and leads Oklahoma to some tough wins, he could definitely be a first-rounder.
