Sam Carter Interview

WalterFootball.com was able to catch up with TCU safety Sam Carter. He was a consistent producer for the Horned Frogs over the past three seasons and one of the top defensive backs in the Big XII.

Carter recorded 63 tackles with 6.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks, four interceptions and 10 passes broken up as a sophomore in 2012. He notched five interceptions, two passes broken up, 49 tackles, four sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss the next year. The senior totaled 55 tackles, five passes broken up and four interceptions in 2014. Carter (6-1, 215) played in the 2015 East-West Shrine and currently is training for the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine.

How was your experience playing in an all-star game?

“It was amazing. The hospital visit was the best event for me. I really enjoyed it. Giving back to the kids was great. Overall, the football was good. Getting to meet guys and going against other top guys from their schools was a lot of fun.”

To me, it looked like you had a strong week of practice. How did you access your performance?

“It was pretty good. There are always things you can improve on, but I enjoyed being able to play deep. I played in the box at TCU, and being able to go deep and communicate things I was able to see out there was fun. I had three or four good days out there.”

You were able to meet with some teams at the East-West Shrine. Who were some of the teams that you met with?

“Off the top, I know I talked to the Broncos, Jacksonville, the Giants, Atlanta, Saints, and a few other teams.”

How is your Combine training going, and do you have any goals for 40 time or other drills?

“It’s going well. I’ve been thinking about the process, working hard, and everything is going well so far. As far as goals, I want to do well in everything. I don’t want to stand out in just certain drills but all of them. I want to have the top numbers with the other safeties in the nation, and hopefully teams see that and I’m more than just what they see on tape.”

Are you going to do all the drills there and at your pro day, or do you have any injury limitations?

“No, I’m going to do everything. I’m a competitor and I’ll do the best I can do.”

TCU is known for running a unique defense that does some different things. What were your roles in the scheme, and did you do lots of man coverage?

“I did different things and was mainly in the box. I also had to play man and zone. I had to cover backs and slot receivers – two years ago I had to cover Tavon Austin – so I’ve covered slot receivers throughout games. I was the underneath guy and also played man-to-man.”

Who were some of the best players you went against in college that you think will be good in the NFL?

“Well obviously Tavon Austin, and he’s already there, but Lockett from Kansas State is really good. Also in practice going against our offense was tough, and we had one of the best offenses in the nation. Our linebackers and defensive line will be really good next year as well.”

You had a profile teammate there in Devonte Fields. He didn’t play this year, but he was a force early in his career. How do you view things for him going forward now that he has transferred to Louisville?

“We all make mistakes. He made a mistake and it cost him, but I know he’s still one of the best defensive players I’ve seen in college football. I’m going to be very excited to see what he does at Louisville over the next two years. He made a mistake, and hopefully he learned from it, but I’m 100 percent behind him, and on Saturdays, he definitely going to show up.”
