2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Giannis Antetokoumpo


Position: Small Forward

Size: 6-9, 196

School: Greece, 1994


Strengths:

Possesses all the ideal physical tools

Length

Athleticism

Shot blocker

Handles the ball well for his size (point forward?)

Court vision

Ability to rebound and lead the break

Can smoothly knife through defenses off the bounce

Finishing at the rim

Can defend multiple positions

Loaded with potential

Weaknesses:

Hasn’t played at a high level in Europe

Still very raw in his all-around development

Strength/physicality

Aggressiveness on the glass

Lacks real blow-by ability

Inconsistent outside shooter

Low release on his shot

Summary: Antetokuompo is perhaps the greatest mystery of the 2013 NBA Draft. He possesses all the physical tools and potential to be a very good NBA player due to his size, versatility, and room to grow. Antetokuompo likely won’t contribute in the NBA anytime soon and figures to be a draft-and-stash guy who could possibly pay huge dividends down the road for a team willing to roll the dice. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if he sneaks into the lottery, though the late teens/early twenties seem like a more realistic landing spot.

Player Comparison: Evan Turner/Devin Ebanks mix. Since Antetokuompo is such a unique prospect, this is a tough one. Turner and Ebanks both were considered “point forward”-type prospects early in their careers due to their ability to handle the ball for their size and contribute in multiple different facets of the game. I think Turner sprinkled in with some Nicolas Batum is Antetokoumpo’s ceiling while an Ebanks-type player is his basement.
