2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Rudy Gobert


Position: Center

Size: 7-2, 238

School: France, 1992


Strengths:

Height

Length (7-8.5 wingspan, 9-7 standing reach)

Shot blocking

Alters shots around the basket

Can cover a ton of ground defensively because of that wingspan and reach

Defensive awareness

Knack for crashing the offensive glass

Finishing at the rim

Weaknesses:

Very raw on the offensive end, most of his buckets come at the rim

Practically no back-to-the-basket moves

Touch around the rim

Zero scoring threat from outside a few feet

Ball handling

Passer

Strength/physicality

Gets outmuscled on the defensive boards

Summary: Because of his freakish combination of height, length, and reach, Gobert is a very intriguing prospect. Outside of his ability to rebound and block shots, Gobert is nowhere near ready to play major minutes in the NBA. Still, he could be worth the roll of the dice in the mid-late lottery for a team willing to give him time to develop his all-around game; especially in this weaker 2013 NBA Draft class.

Player Comparison: Hasheem Thabeet. Due to his size, Thabeet was thought to potentially be the next great shot blocker in the NBA, but has been an absolute bust since his offensive game is non-existent. Gobert has the size and length, but the rest of his game is still very much a work in progress. If he can further develop his fundamentals, Gobert could be a paint-protector and quality big man. If not, he will struggle to earn minutes or even stay in the league just like Thabeet.
