2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Steven Adams


Position: Center

Size: 7-0, 250

School: Pittsburgh, Freshman


Strengths:

Size

Strength

NBA-ready body

Rebounding

Shot blocking

Solid athlete

Runs the floor well for his size

Mobility

Lateral quickness for a seven-footer

Passing ability for a big

Weaknesses:

Raw with his all-around offensive game (back-to-the-basket and face-up)

Doesn’t have great touch around the rim

Free throw shooting

A project big man

Still learning the game from a basketball IQ standpoint

Plays too soft sometimes

Summary: Adams is nowhere near NBA ready, but because he has 17 siblings, his journey to the NBA was accelerated. Adams’ size and mobility for a seven-footer will be attractive to NBA scouts who are willing to wait a couple years for his development. More than likely, he falls somewhere in the late teens to late first round depending on which team is willing to gamble on his potential.

Player Comparison: Zaza Pachulia. Pachulia has put together a steady career as a backup NBA big man due to his size and effectiveness down low. Adams has more upside than Pachulia, but until Adams puts it all together, he projects to be a big body inside to take up space and occassionally show signs of life.
