2010 Fantasy Football Draft: The Four-Man PPR Fantasy Draft

Missing Include

July 1, 2010.

This is a four-man (actually three-man, one-woman) 2010 Fantasy Football PPR Mock Draft I participated in last Friday. The plan was for forum members Injured Reserve, Body Burners and I, as well as Man-Eaters (Injured Reserve's girlfriend) to control three teams each in a 12-team draft.

I don't know how Injured Reserve, Body Burners and Man-Eaters drafted, but I employed a different strategy for all of my teams. For Team 1 (drafting first), I just went best player available. For Team 2 (drafting fifth), I decided to pick a quarterback early. And for Team 3 (drafting eighth), I opted to go receiver-receiver with my top two selections. I just wanted to see how things would play out in three different scenarios.

Here are the results with commentary below each round.

Also, be sure to check out my other 2010 Fantasy Football articles, which will include rankings, sleepers, busts, cheat sheets and other things.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Adrian Peterson RB
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Maurice Jones-Drew RB
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Ray Rice RB
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Chris Johnson RB
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Frank Gore RB
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Aaron Rodgers QB
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Andre Johnson WR
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Randy Moss WR
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Michael Turner RB
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Ryan Grant RB
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Jamaal Charles RB
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Peyton Manning QB

Before the actual fantasy football analysis, let me note that Body Burners intentionally tried to make himself a Jerk of the Week. His tactics included making fun of my aversion to sesame seeds and threatening to dump an entire 2-liter of Pepsi on my head. Fortunately, Injured Reserve ordered pizza, and pizza makes me happy. Whatever Body Burners did or threatened to do, it didn't bother me because I had pizza. NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM.

MY PICKS: Pretty standard. I went with Randy Moss No. 8 overall because I wanted to go receiver-receiver, and Andre Johnson was off the board.

The eight spot is a tough one in a PPR format. If all goes according to plan, the top five backs, Andre Johnson and Aaron Rodgers will be taken, meaning you have to select someone like Moss, Jamaal Charles, Michael Turner or Ryan Grant. You want a top-seven pick this year in a PPR league.

BEST PICK: Andre Johnson is a stud in PPR leagues. I'd say Body Burners took Johnson one pick before me to piss me off, but he's a savvy drafter and really knows what he's doing.

WORST PICK: Actually, everyone in the room is a fantasy guru, so this category will probably be a tough one to fill. I don't like Peyton Manning in the first round of a PPR league, especially in a year in which you can wait on quarterbacks. But I wouldn't call it a bad pick at No. 12. More like "least good."

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Miles Austin WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Drew Brees QB
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Matt Schaub QB
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - DeSean Jackson WR
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Calvin Johnson WR
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - DeAngelo Williams RB
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Roddy White WR
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Tony Romo QB
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - LeSean McCoy RB
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Philip Rivers QB
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Brandon Marshall WR
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Shonn Greene RB

MY PICKS: I don't get why everyone is so down on Tony Romo compared to Philip Rivers and Matt Schaub. Romo's my No. 3 quarterback. He had a great 2009 season and now has two stud receivers and an All-Pro tight end at his disposal. Why can't he have a better season than Rivers or Schaub?

BEST PICK: DeAngelo Williams at 2.06 is a steal. I would have taken him at 2.05 if I wasn't planning on going receiver-receiver with that particular team.

WORST PICK: I love DeSean Jackson as a player, but I feel like 2.04 is too early for him in a PPR league. Jackson just doesn't catch that many passes; he had 63 receptions last season after grabbing 62 balls in 2008.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Steve Smith WR (Panthers)
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Anquan Boldin WR
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Ryan Mathews RB
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Steve Smith WR (Giants)
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Pierre Thomas RB
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Rashard Mendenhall RB
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Steven Jackson RB
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Knowshon Moreno RB
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Cedric Benson RB
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Sidney Rice WR
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Chris Wells RB
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Joseph Addai RB

MY PICKS: I drew some quizzical looks when I selected Steve Smith atop Round 3. When I took Smith, the other three people in the room looked at me, raised their eyebrows and asked, "Of the Giants, right?" I don't know if they were messing with me, but I felt quite stupid when I meekly said, "Umm... no, Panthers." Hey, even with the fractured forearm, I feel like Smith's a great pick at 3.01.

BEST PICK: This is not an attempt to keep Body Burners from pouring soda on my head, but he once again earns the best pick. Steven Jackson is unbelievable value at 3.07. Everyone in the room hated him this season, but watching him fall to the middle of the third round was pretty remarkable. And by the way, I also loved Ryan Mathews at 3.03.

WORST PICK: Time to bash a pick of the Body Burners'. I feel like he really reached for Chris Wells at 3.11. Wells doesn't catch any passes, and opposing defenses are going to be able to focus on shutting him down with Kurt Warner gone.

Actually, Body Burners didn't like this selection either. Right after he made it, he asked me to change this particular team name to "Body Warmers" or just "Bad Team." I made it both.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Larry Fitzgerald WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Ronnie Brown RB
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Marques Colston WR
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Reggie Wayne WR
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Jonathan Stewart RB
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Chad Ochocinco WR
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Dallas Clark TE
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Greg Jennings WR
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Vincent Jackson WR
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Vernon Davis TE
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Brent Celek TE
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Jahvid Best RB

MY PICKS: Man-Eaters groaned when I selected Greg Jennings. She drafted Jennings last year, and after a disappointing start from the Packer wideout, she decided to trade him to me. Jennings played somewhat well after that, but wasn't all that great. Still, I think he's due for a rebound season, especially with Donald Driver quickly being phased out.

By the way, I'm really loving my WR-WR team: Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Knowshon Moreno, Jonathan Stewart. Can someone say mock draft champion?

BEST PICK: We're all convinced that Larry Fitzgerald will bust this year because Matt Leinart stinks. Still, he should not have fallen to Round 4. Props to Man-Eaters for taking him off the board at 4.01.

WORST PICK: Boo-urns to anyone taking a tight end this early. You can wait on a quality tight end until Round 10 or 11.

By the way, I don't think Reggie Wayne is a bad pick in Round 4, but I'd like to bring up how awful he was down the stretch of the 2009 season because I read off his performances to everyone at our mock draft:

at Texans: 3 catches, 19 yards. 1 TD.
vs. Titans: 4 catches, 48 yards. 0 TDs.
vs. Broncos: 4 catches, 43 yards. 0 TDs.
at Jaguars: 5 catches, 132 yards. 1 TD.
vs. Jets (2 1/2 quarters): 3 catches, 33 yards. 0 TDs.
vs. Ravens (playoffs): 8 catches, 63 yards. 1 TD.
vs. Jets (playoffs): 3 catches, 55 yards. 0 TDs.
vs. Saints (Super Bowl): 5 catches, 46 yards. 0 TDs.

"Old," "declining," "injured" and "debacled" are four words that come to mind.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Antonio Gates TE
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Ben Tate RB
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Hakeem Nicks WR
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Michael Crabtree WR
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Felix Jones RB
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Mike Sims-Walker WR
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Pierre Garcon WR
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - C.J. Spiller RB
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Matt Forte RB
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Brandon Jacobs RB
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Percy Harvin WR
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Thomas Jones RB

MY PICKS: Didn't I just say that you can wait on tight ends? D'oh!

BEST PICK: I looovvveeee Ben Tate. Great pick in Round 5.

WORST PICK: The Antonio Gates selection is really bad. The Thomas Jones pick isn't very good either. There's a reason the Jets got rid of him. He's done. And Kansas City's offensive line sucks. And Jamaal Charles is there. Bleh.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Jason Witten TE
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Santana Moss WR
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Jermichael Finley TE
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Tom Brady QB
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Dwayne Bowe WR
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Jay Cutler QB
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Cadillac Williams RB
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Jeremy Maclin WR
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Eli Manning QB
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Wes Welker WR
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Joe Flacco QB
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Reggie Bush RB

MY PICKS: Nothing worth noting. If Reggie Bush stays healthy, he could be a PPR monster. I know, I know, unrealistic, but there's a very slim chance he actually plays more than 12 games this year.

BEST PICK: I hate tight ends early, but Jermichael Finley at 6.03 is a great deal. He's my No. 3 tight end.

WORST PICK: Eli Manning in Round 6 kind of wanted to make me puke the pizza I just ate.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Kevin Kolb QB
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Hines Ward WR
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Robert Meachem WR
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Kellen Winslow Jr. TE
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Michael Bush RB
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - LaDainian Tomlinson RB
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Jerome Harrison RB
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Justin Forsett RB
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Owen Daniels TE
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Ricky Williams RB
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Laurence Maroney RB
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Marion Barber RB

MY PICKS: Here's to hoping the Seahawks don't trade for the completely worthless Marshawn Lynch so that my receiver-receiver team can dominate!

BEST PICK: I'm going to praise myself for the Michael Bush pick at 7.05. Al Davis is no longer making the decisions, which is why Bush ran with the first team in minicamp. Unless Undead Al once again takes command of the Raiders, Bush could have a huge season. He's the best back on the team, and it's not even close.

WORST PICK: I can't say I'm a fan of the two injured tight ends in Round 7. I'd rather wait until Round 11 so I can take either Chris Cooley or John Carlson.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Santonio Holmes WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Steve Breaston WR
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Derrick Mason WR
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Fred Jackson RB
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Brett Favre QB
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Visanthe Shiancoe TE
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Darren Sproles RB
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Montario Hardesty RB
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Chester Taylor RB
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Ahmad Bradshaw RB
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Tim Hightower RB
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Larry Johnson RB

MY PICKS: If you haven't noticed, Team No. 1 has no second receiver yet. That's because I was going best player available with that squad, and every wideout I considered would have been a reach whenever Team No. 1 picked. I went over this more in my recent 2010 Fantasy Football Wide Receiver Scarcity article.

BEST PICK: There's a ton of upside with Ahmad Bradshaw at 8.10. If Brandon Jacobs gets hurt - and we all know that'll happen - a healthy Bradshaw could have a solid season behind a currently healthy offensive line.

WORST PICK: Forgive me for sounding like Dan Marino, but I actually think all of this picks in this round were pretty solid. No, Boomer Esiason, put down the baseball bat! I'm not actually Dan Marino!

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Johnny Knox WR
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Willis McGahee RB
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Lee Evans WR
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Vikings Defense
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Braylon Edwards WR
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Kenny Britt WR
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Darren McFadden RB
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Matt Ryan QB
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Tony Gonzalez TE
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Donald Brown RB
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Zach Miller TE
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Devin Aromashodu WR

MY PICKS: Johnny Knox is Team No. 1's No. 2 receiver. If you're too lazy to click on that Wide Receiver Scarcity article, basically you're either going to reach or get screwed if you don't take a couple of wideouts early. Team No. 1 got screwed.

BEST PICK: Not sure how Tony Gonzalez lasted until Round 9. That's not going to happen in many leagues.

WORST PICK: I will never understand how anyone can take a defense before Round 13 or 14. I'd rather scour the waiver wires for the best matchup available rather than be stuck with one defense that you have to ride throughout the season.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Eagles Defense
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Jets Defense
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Carson Palmer QB
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Donovan McNabb QB
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Chris Cooley TE
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Eddie Royal WR
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Mike Wallace WR
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Demaryius Thomas WR
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Kevin Walter WR
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Darrius Heyward-Bey WR
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Chris Chambers WR
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Chaz Schilens WR

MY PICKS: See what I mean about waiting on tight ends? By the way, when I took Chaz Schilens, Injured Reserve remarked, "You love Chaz Schilens." It's true. "I want to have a sexy time with Chaz-a Schilen! Very nice."

BEST PICK: Donovan McNabb shouldn't fall into the 10th round. Yet more evidence that you can wait on a quarterback this year.

WORST PICK: Aside from the defensive picks, I didn't dislike anything in this round. Yes, that includes the Darrius Heyward-Bey selection; DHB has drawn rave reviews this offseason, so why not at the bottom of Round 10?

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Anthony Gonzalez WR
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Mike Bell RB
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Julian Edelman WR
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Mark Sanchez QB
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - John Carlson TE
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Malcom Floyd WR
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Chad Henne QB
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Steve Slaton RB
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Packers Defense
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Ravens Defense
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Matthew Stafford QB
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - David Garrard QB

MY PICKS: Forum member Colts Homer will laugh at Pick 11.01 because we've argued about Anthony Gonzalez's 2010 status. I say Gonzalez will be the slot receiver if he's healthy. Colts Homer argues that Gonzalez will start across from Reggie Wayne, with Austin Collie stationed in the slot. Regardless, we'll both agree that Gonzalez is a great value pick in the 11th round.

BEST PICK: If Vincent Jackson holds out or gets traded, Malcom Floyd will be San Diego's No. 1 receiver - and Injured Reserve got him in Round 11. Pretty awesome.

WORST PICK: When picking a backup quarterback, I want someone with upside. David Garrard has no upside. You know what you're going to get with him - about 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Nothing exciting; just meh.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Antonio Bryant WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Clinton Portis RB
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Golden Tate WR
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - James Jones WR
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Devin Hester WR
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Tashard Choice RB
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Toby Gerhart RB
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Dez Bryant WR
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Bernard Berrian WR
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Leon Washington RB
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Marshawn Lynch RB
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Brian Hartline WR

MY PICKS: Three receivers with a ton of upside. Dez Bryant should finish strong; Brian Hartline will benefit from Brandon Marshall's double teams; and Devin Hester was a no-brainer as a Mike Martz receiver in Round 12.

BEST PICK: There's a good chance James Jones starts as one of Aaron Rodgers' receivers this year. If so, Injured Reserve obtained a major sleeper in Round 12.

WORST PICK: I think Tashard Choice is a good running back, but he's a third-stringer who will probably never get to play. If this were a real league, chances are that he'd be off Body Burners' roster by Week 4. Still though, it's Round 12 and maybe a couple of freak injuries take place in training camp.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Ben Roethlisberger QB
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Steelers Defense
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Kevin Smith RB
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Stephen Gostkowski K
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Donald Driver WR
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Austin Collie WR
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Jason Avant WR
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Jacoby Jones WR
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Mohamed Massaquoi WR
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Arrelious Benn WR
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Brandon Pettigrew TE
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Devin Thomas WR

MY PICKS: Surprised? I'm down on Ben Roethlisberger and Donald Driver - but not in Round 13. I've been wrong before.

BEST PICK: I stated earlier that I hate picking defenses early, but even I'll admit that obtaining Pittsburgh's sack-happy stop unit in Round 13 is a major steal.

WORST PICK: Shame on Body Burners for taking a kicker in Round 13. Perhaps this move is what will get him into the Jerks of the Week section.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - Jerricho Cotchery WR
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Louis Murphy WR
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Jason Snelling RB
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - Mike Williams WR (Buccaneers)
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Jabar Gaffney WR
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - 49ers Defense
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - Jason Campbell QB
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Mario Manningham WR
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Bears Defense
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Alex Smith QB
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Davone Bess WR

MY PICKS: I'm making my final non-defensive and non-kicker picks. I really like Mike Williams as a late-round sleeper. He's been more impressive than Arrelious Benn in minicamp. If he can keep his act together, he'll be a stud wideout in Tampa Bay.

BEST PICK: Jabar Gaffney had 14 catches for 213 yards in the 2009 season finale. Josh McDaniels will probably use Eddie Royal or Demaryius Thomas in the Brandon Marshall role this year, but who knows with McDaniels? He's far from conventional, and may decide that Gaffney is his best wideout.

WORST PICK: Body Burners had the best pick in this round, but Body Warmers had the worst selection. In Round 14, you have to be looking for upside. There is absolutely no upside with Jerricho Cotchery as the No. 3 receiver on a run-first offense.

(1) WalterFootball No. 1 - Cowboys Defense
(2) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Mason Crosby K
(3) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Garrett Hartley K
(4) Body Burners No. 4 - Nate Burleson WR
(5) WalterFootball Early QB - Bengals Defense
(6) Injured Reserve No. 6 - Rob Bironas K
(7) Body Burners No. 7 - Chargers Defense
(8) WalterFootball WR,WR - Saints Defense
(9) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Bernard Scott RB
(10) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Ryan Longwell K
(11) Body Warmers Bad Team - Robbie Gould K
(12) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Neil Rackers K

MY PICKS: My three defensive picks: Cowboys (tons of sacks), Saints (lots of turnovers if Darren Sharper plays well again) and Bengals (ranked 6th in defense in 2009). See what I mean about being able to wait for defenses?

BEST PICK: Bernard Scott! Cedric Benson was recently arrested and now faces a possible suspension. Scott could really blow up if Benson's out.

WORST PICK: I can't find any bad picks in the kicker-defense round.

(1) Man-Eaters No. 12 - Terrell Owens WR
(2) Body Warmers Bad Team - QB Dog Killer QB
(3) Man-Eaters No. 10 - Sammy Morris RB
(4) Injured Reserve No. 9 - Ryan Succop, K
(5) WalterFootball WR,WR - David Akers K
(6) Body Burners No. 7 - Lawrence Tynes K
(7) Injured Reserve No. 6 - BenJarvus Green-Ellis RB
(8) WalterFootball Early QB - David Buehler K
(9) Body Burners No. 4 - Malcolm Kelly WR
(10) Injured Reserve No. 3 - Matt Moore QB
(11) Man-Eaters No. 2 - Rashad Jennings RB
(12) WalterFootball No. 1 - Dan Carpenter K

MY PICKS: Here's how much I care about fantasy kickers:

BEST PICK: Anyone who took a kicker deserves the best pick - meaning that an earlier selection of theirs wasn't spent on such a worthless position.

WORST PICK: The Body Burners took QB Dog Killer just to piss me off. And piss me off he did. Seriously, a Pepsi shower sounds really good about now compared to writing about that scumbag.
