Why Undrafted?: Seth Henigan

This series was created a number of years ago in response to questions about why certain well-known prospects went unselected in NFL drafts. For these articles, I reach out to sources with NFL teams to find out why their organizations passed on drafting a given player, and/or, what were the reasons for other teams to pass on that prospect. The positive response to “Why Undrafted” and questions from readers about why prospects were drafted lower than the media expectations led us to create the parallel series “Why the Slide?”

Both series are back this year. Feel free to email me requests for Why the Slide? and Why Undrafted? at [email protected]. I can’t promise to get to all of them, but I will do my best and definitely will respond to the email.

Over the past two seasons, Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan has been one of the most consistent point producers in college football. In 2023, he completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,883 yards with 32 touchdowns and nine interceptions. As a senior, Henigan stayed consistent, completing 65 percent of his passes for 3,502 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions. Henigan (6-3, 215) was expected to be a day-three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he slipped to the undrafted ranks.

Team sources say that Henigan was a late-round draftable player, but just slipped to the undrafted ranks. There just weren’t enough teams that were high enough on him for third-string competition.

After going undrafted, Henigan signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and that was a fine landing spot. Trevor Lawrence is firmly established as the starter with veterans John Wolford and Nick Mullens as the backups. Henigan will most likely have to beat out Wolford for a spot on the active roster, and if Henigan doesn’t do that, he could earn a spot on the practice squad. Lawrence has had issues staying healthy, so if those veterans don’t play well in relief duty, Henigan could have a shot at getting playing time. Earning a spot on the practice squad and becoming the third-string quarterback would be a good start towards Henigan sticking in the NFL.
