Why Undrafted?: Victor Hampton, CB, South Carolina
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell
The 2014 NFL Draft had a record number of underclassmen who entered the 2014 NFL Draft with years of eligibility remaining in college. A huge number of those prospects were foolish to do so. One of them who made the worst decision was South Carolina cornerback Victor Hampton. The Gamecocks have featured a tough defense the past few years and Hampton was one of their top defensive backs.
Sources have said that Hampton is talented. The 5-foot-9, 197-pounder is a physical defender who has coverage skills to be a nickel corner. As far as his playing ability, Hampton was said to be a prospect worthy of a third- or fourth-round pick.
The reason why Hampton went undrafted and remains unsigned is because of character issues. Sources say he has massive off-the-field concerns; so much so that teams are hesitant to even sign him as an undrafted free agent. Hampton is currently lobbying teams to get a try out. He would have been better off returning to South Carolina and cleaning up his off-the-field behavior before turning pro. Hampton may not get a shot in the NFL.
