Why Undrafted?: Loucheiz Purifoy, CB, Florida
By Charlie Campbell, @draftcampbell
Like teammate Marcus Roberson, Purifoy made a terrible decision in entering the 2014 NFL Draft. Prior to the 2013 season, there was a lot of hype about Purifoy breaking out as one of the SEC’s top cornerbacks. He had a strong sophomore season in 2012 during which he played well on defense and was a superstar on special teams. Purifoy’s junior year didn’t go well as he missed time with a suspension and didn’t play as well as he did the season before. His collegiate career ended with him getting dominated by Florida State wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, a first-round pick of the Panthers. Purifoy made a terrible decision following the 2013 season and entered the 2014 NFL Draft.
Sources have told WalterFootball.com that Purifoy and Roberson had some of the worst performances in the lead up to an NFL Draft of any players they could remember. Not only did Roberson and Purifoy each not interview well, but they also had terrible workouts at the Combine and at Florida’s pro day. Sources said that both players looked completely unprepared for their pro day. Whatever training facility those two attended after the season was a waste of time and money. Along with that bad performance, Purifoy didn’t alleviate the concerns of teams regarding his off-the-field behavior. The character concerns were the biggest reason why he went undrafted. Thus, Purifoy slipped out of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Purifoy preferred to sign with other teams, namely Houston, but ended up landing with the Colts. Initially, it was reported that Purifoy signed with Denver, but that wouldn’t have made sense as the Broncos loaded up at the cornerback position in the offseason.
Signing with the Colts could be the best landing spot as they are looking for a long-term starter to pair with Vontae Davis. Purifoy is a phenomenal special teams player as a gunner on punt coverage and on kick returns. Perhaps Chuck Pagano and his staff can get through to Purifoy.
