2013 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Ryan Kelly


Position: Power Forward

Size: 7-0, 228

School: Duke, Senior


Strengths:

Three-point shooting

Catch-and-shoot ability

Effective in pick-and-pop situations

Mid-range game

Decent athleticism

Handles the ball well for his size

Basketball IQ

Flopping (errr… I mean, drawing charges)

Weaknesses:

Physicality

Strength

Length

Lacks the quickness to guard athletic NBA power forwards

Soft on the boards

Creating his own shot

Summary: Kelly’s 36-point outburst against Miami in early March really helped him make a splash on the NBA radar after missing a significant portion of the season due to injury. His ability to shoot the rock for a big could land him a spot in the second round. A lack of physicality in terms of who he guards at the next level will hold his stock back some since he isn’t physical enough to bang with true big men and not quick enough to defend NBA power forwards.

Player Comparison: Donatas Motiejunas. Both guys are stretch fours who are much more comfortable and effective playing out on the perimeter rather than being a back to the basket threat. Like Motiejunas, Kelly’s physical development will increase his chances of becoming a role player at the next level.
