The Pistons were a dumpster fire in 2023, winning just 16 games, by far the fewest in the NBA, but I have liked how they’ve worked since the seson ended. Hiring Monty Williams was a brilliant move because they now have a proven winner in charge. I also liked the Isaiah Stewart signing, and grabbing a needed shooter in Joe Harris is nice, but Detroit also had one of my favorite drafts. Ausar Thompson should be a star at the two/three, and Marcus Sasser can be an elite sixth man. The Pistons are wisely allowing Williams to develop their excellent young roster, and I’m a fan of their work.

Signings:

  • Keita Bates-Diop- Grade: B

Pistons’ 2023 NBA Draft – Grade: A

  • No. 5: Ausar Thompson, SG, USA
  • No. 25: Marcus Sasser, G, Houston

Actually, I’m one of the few that likes Ausar Thompson more than his brother. At 6-foot-7 and with incredible physical gifts, he should be a defensive monster at three spots. Thompson needs to become a consistent shooter, and if he can, he could be an all-star. Thompson fits the Pistons well, as they will likely use him with 6-foot-3 guard Jaden Ivey and franchise player 6-foot-7 guard Cade Cunningham. I loved Sasser as a prospect because with his scoring ability and playmaking talent, he should be an elite sixth man. A very young and talented group of guards got a lot deeper, and I’m a huge fan of the two guys who Detroit took in the 2023 NBA Draft.
