Jeremiah Smith Prospect Preview
By Charlie Campbell
Career Recap:
Ohio State has produced a number of first-round wide receiver prospects over recent years, with players like Carnell Tate, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Emeka Egbuka, Garrett Wilson, and Chris Olave. Jeremiah Smith will keep that tradition going in 2027, and he might be the most talented among that group. In his debut season, Smith caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns, helping Ohio State win the National Championship. In 2025, Smith had a change at quarterback but stayed consistent as he caught 87 passes for 1,243 yards and 12 touchdowns.
2026 Season Outlook:
The best games to watch Smith this season could come against Texas (Sep. 12), Indiana (Oct. 17), Oregon (Nov. 7), and Michigan (Nov. 28).
Prospect Summary:
There is no doubt that Smith is an elite receiver prospect with special talent for the NFL. He has excellent size with the speed to challenge defenses vertically. To go along with size and speed, Smith is an extraordinary route-runner. He is very smooth with excellent feet to avoid extra steps and cut crisply in and out of breaks. Along with his fluid athleticism, Smith has a burst out of the break and that leads to him being a nightmare for defensive backs to cover. Smith is a phenom with an extraordinary ability to create separation and quickly get open.
Smith’s ability to get open quickly on short to intermediate routes is extraordinary. For a big body receiver, he has shocking twitch and burst as a route-runner. With sudden acceleration, Smith will dart past defensive backs out of breaks to get open for his quarterback. He is rare and dynamic with his ability to uncover quickly on short routes that set up easy completions with him tacking on more yards after the catch. He has the size and wingspan to give his quarterback a big target and box out defenders from the ball. On top of his size and speed, Smith has excellent hands and he is a natural hands catcher. With his size, burst, and hands, Smith is an elite possessional receiver. He is outstanding at moving the chains and he should produce some huge reception and yardage totals as a pro receiver.
Smith has the speed to stretch defenses vertically and in the open field he can run away from defenders. While he may not the speed of a Jamison Williams or Tyreek Hill, Smith is plenty fast enough to be a deep threat receiver. Smith has a second gear that employs as a route runner and when he has the ball in his hands as a runner. Smith is not super elusive after the catch and is more of a North-South runner, but he can dodge some tacklers and power his way through tackles to finish falling forward for more yardage or banging over the goal line. Downfield he also is dangerous with his size to make catches over defensive backs and he is superb operating along the sideline.
For the NFL, Smith looks like an elite No.1 receiver. He could be a Pro Bowl wideout early in his career and I think Smith has the ability to be one of the best players at his position in the league. Smith reminds this analyst of Julio Jones and I think Smith could be a superstar receiver like Jones was during his career with the Falcons.
2027 NFL Draft Expectations:
Entering the 2026 season, Smith was the highest graded prospect on NFL teams’ preseason watch list. He looks likely to be one of the first players selected next April, and is the preseason favorite to be the best player in the draft regardless of position. Quarterbacks might get selected ahead of Smith because of the position, but Smith looks like a safe bet to be one of the first players off the board. In terms of caliber of prospect, Smith is up there with players like Myles Garrett, Bijan Robinson, the Bosa Brothers, Jadeveon Clowney, and other players that were once in a decade caliber.
