Prospect Summary:

After Shough’s initial debut at Oregon as the replacement for Justin Herbert, I had Shough in as a potential first-round pick in my year after mock drafts. Shough backed up Herbert in 2018 and 2019 before becoming the starter when Herbert moved on to the Chargers. In 2020, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 1,559 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in the shortened COVID season. In 2021, he transferred to Texas Tech and played in four games before a broken collarbone ended his season. In 2022, he missed six games with a shoulder injury. In 2023, Shough started four games before a broken leg ended his season. For his seventh season of college football, Shough transferred to Louisville and was finally able to play a full season. He completed 63 percent of his passes for 3,195 yards with 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. After the season, Shough aced the pre-draft process. He was superb at the Senior Bowl, was very impressive at the NFL Scouting Combine, and was excellent in the team interviews. Team sources have said that Shough is the smartest of all the 2025 quarterback prospects.

There is a lot to like about Shough as a pro prospect. Team sources say that if Shough were not as old and did not have such an extensive injury history, he easily could be the second-rated quarterback in this draft class and a top-10 pick. Shough is a smart pocket passing quarterback with good size, a strong arm, and some athleticism to make things happen with his legs. The most important trait for any quarterback to have is accuracy, and Shough has it. He throws some perfect strikes with excellent location in the short to intermediate part of the field with a very catchable ball for his receivers. Along with being a precise passer, Shough has an excellent deep ball with some phenomenal ball placement deep down the field. Shough comes from a pro-style system with experience working under center, and he looks very natural executing play-action. Shough throws with timing, anticipation, and rhythm. He has the look of a capable pocket passer for the NFL.

The durability and injury history are very worrisome for NFL teams, and they prefer players to be younger. One of the problems with Shough’s injury history is all the games and reps that were stolen from him, which slowed down his development. As a result, Shough has some things to improve. He can be late with his eyes sometimes, will struggle with pass pressure, and get antsy in the pocket. Those issues will need to be ironed out and worked on with his pro coaching.

In the 2025 NFL Draft, Shough could be a day-two pick. He has the ability to be a good starter in the NFL and could end up being a massive steal if Shough can stay healthy and he plays up to his ability.

Prospect Comparison:

Jared Goff. In terms of style of play, Shough reminds me of Goff as a pocket passer. Like Goff, he throws accurately out of the pocket with an excellent deep ball. Shough is a better athlete and runner than Goff, but Goff handles pressure and throwing under the pass rush much better than Shough.
