The Saints are undergoing an interesting offseason. They were way over the salary cap and have been restructuring contracts all over their roster to get under the salary cap for next season. New Orleans has some free agents, but the core of the team is returning next season, and the organizations feels it has a strong veteran roster. As a result, sources with New Orleans are optimistic the team could take the best player available in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Saints also could consider wide receiver talent considering Michael Thomas is not the player he used to be and they could use more weapons for Derek Carr. There could be some good receiving options available for New Orleans in the early rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Cornerback is another position that could get consideration if the Saints decide they will be moving on from Marshon Lattimore in the not too distant future. They could have the top cornerbacks available to them.
The offensive line could be a consideration for New Orleans because long-time lineman Andrus Peat is hitting free agency while second-year pro Trevor Penning has had some growing pains since being a first-round pick. However, Saints sources said they were still optimistic about Penning and felt that he is progressing, so the franchise is not forced into taking an offensive tackle, in their opinions. In my latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft, I have the Saints taking the best player available and getting some offensive line help, but sources with New Orleans, feel the team has a variety of ways it could go and won’t reach on a need. The Saints’ approach is to get the best player available, and they feel they are in position to do that this year.
