2010 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Da’Sean Butler

Position: Guard/Forward

Size: 6-7, 205

School: West Virginia, Senior

Strengths:
  • Pure shooter
  • Sweet stroke with a high release that makes it difficult to block
  • Great catch and shooter
  • Nice turnaround jump shot
  • Moves well without the ball
  • Can take advantage of smaller defenders by posting them up
  • Good court vision
  • Smart defender
  • High basketball IQ
  • Outstanding character guy
  • Mr. Clutch in late-game pressure situations

    Weaknesses:
  • Athleticism
  • Lateral quickness on defense
  • Not great at attacking the rim off the bounce
  • Needs to become a better handler

Summary: Butler capped off an outstanding career at West Virginia with a stellar senior season. His basketball IQ is off the charts, he thrives in the big-pressure situations, and can shoot it from deep. However, a lack of athleticism and torn ACL suffered in the Final Four pretty much guarantees he will be a second-round pick.

Player Comparison: Sasha Pavlovic. Pavlovic overcame his lack of athleticism and stayed in the NBA due to his outside shot. Butler will need to follow suit if he hopes to make a career in the NBA.
